Stop Transmission Line in Driftless

Driftless Defenders needs to raise $20,000 to continue our grassroots effort opposing ATC's proposed Cardinal-Hickory Creek (CHC) high voltage transmission line that will be erected through the Driftless Area. The Public Service Commission of Wisconsin (PSC) approved the line. This decision is being appealed at both the state and federal level. The clock is ticking. To win this fight we need your help!
This line is not needed. Energy use is flat or declining, and Wisconsin has one of the most reliable electrical grids in the country. Nor will this line carry renewable energy. These massive industrial towers and lines would cut a 125 mile long swath through southwest Wisconsin's scenic Driftless Area, a special place in the Midwest where none of the glaciers rolled over the land. The $500-$700 million cost (2 billion over the life of the line) would be paid by utility customers, as will the guaranteed profit of $50 million annually that will go to ATC’s stockholders. If built this line will affect so many aspects of local life - ecological, natural, farm viability, wildlife, land values, tourism decline and much more. However, it doesn’t have to be that way!
The money we raise through Go Fund Me is used to erect more opposition billboards along our roadways; create stickers to be displayed on cars; information brochures and posters; and advertisements. It enables our Outreach Team to be a presence at community events such as town parades and rallies.
Our goal is to build strong public opposition to Cardinal-Hickory Creek. Winning in the court of public opinion – which we’re winning! – is necessary to winning in the court of law. We must do both. Ours is a broad campaign intended to arouse the public against this project so that all elected officials—plus the PSC and especially the Governor—will hear the voters’ message and be persuaded that CHC should never be built.
Our group started with five concerned neighbors getting together to talk about the transmission line project. We are now hundreds strong living in the four counties of Grant, Iowa, Dane, and Sauk. A lot has been done and if we can sustain these efforts and press forward, even more can be accomplished. Please give what you can; any amount will help.
