Forgotten Minds Foundation is working in collaboration with Habeb Public Mental Hospital in order to buy land. On this land, we will build and maintain a functioning facility that will incorporate a total care clinic following the Person Centred Planning approach.
Forgotten Minds Foundation was founded in 2014 after I took a trip to Africa in 2012 to see how people with mental illness were being treated. I was heart broken once I saw their living, and medical conditions. Patients were chained to trees, beds, and rocks. They lived, ate, showered, and slept outside. In addition to that, the society shunned them. If someone with a mental illness were to walk outside the children in the neighborhood would stone them. There is no one to defend them or advocate for them. There is no one to educate the society about mental health.
I started to evaluate my life and realized how lucky I am to live in Canada. We have a great health care system here that cares for their mentally ill citizens with world class treatment. After coming back home from Somalia, I made a promise to myself. I promised that I would raise funds to build a Psychiatric Hospital in the capital city of Somalia. Somalia has the highest rate of people with mental illness. According to the World Health Organization 1 in 3 are mentally ill in Somalia.
For this project, I am collaborating with a non profit organization called Kajoog and Dr. Habeb to purchase land for the hospital. Our goal is to raise $100,000. I am hoping we can work together to celebrate life, build a Psychiatric Hospital, and help these people to live a better quality of life.
