Our teammate, league president, and friend Mike Lonesky aka Doom Buggy #999 went in to the hospital in Syracuse (about a 45 minute drive from home) on Friday 8/9 for a planned surgery to remove part of a rib that had a suspicious growth on it. The plan was to be home resting by Sunday 8/11, and then attend the Mohawk Valley Cup tournament by the following Sunday as a spectator to cheer on our team and see all his roller derby friends. Things didn't go as planned.
During the surgery they found that they needed to also remove a small piece of Mike's lung in order to get the rib out. OK, scary sounding, but not life threatening. Then, during the surgery (done on his side to access the ribcage), his breathing tube came partially dislodged and in the process of emergently getting it back in, damage was caused to his trachea.
They decided to keep him sedated after the surgery longer than expected, to allow his body to do some of the recovery with no interference from him resisting from a pain response or fighting against the breathing tube.
Then, Monday morning 8/12, still unconscious, it was discovered that he had developed acute pneumonia. He developed a high fever and began to fight against the machines helping to keep his vitals stable. In order to keep all his systems working, his doctors have put him into a drug induced state of paralysis and are allowing all his bodily functions to be taken care of completely by the machines.
Things are scary, but getting slowly better. Once the infection in his lungs is under control and his temperature comes down (days, maybe a week or more), they can get him conscious and evaluate where things are at.
The biggest issue outside of his immediate health at this point is that what started as a few days of bed rest and a couple weeks out of work, has turned into a few weeks (if we're lucky) in the hospital, and they are telling us its very probable once he's home, at least 2-4 months out of work.
His family is sleeping at his home near Utica and driving the 45 minutes to be with him daily, sometimes multiple times per day, leaving behind jobs and other responsibilities and using up vacation days.
So, what we're trying to do here is provide a financial buffer so that Mike's loved ones have the means to afford some extra days off, gas and tolls back and forth to be with him in the hospital, and easy access to healthy food while they're there. Then, part two is to provide a further financial buffer so that once he's home, his normal daily bills are not a burden while he's out of work.
Please consider giving any amount you can afford. We, his teammates, really appreciate it, and know that he would be doing the same for any of us in a similar situation.
