Donovan's Boy Scout World Jamboree

Donation protected
Hi my name is Donovan. I have been working since first grade to advance in rank through Cub Scouts and now in the Boy Scouts of America. I am now a First Class Scout with one achievement remaining before I earn my Star rank. That means I only have two more ranks to get to Eagle! Yay!

When I first heard about the International Jamboree in Japan in 2015, I thought of how incredible it would be to get to meet my fellow Scouts from the other side of the world. I have always been open to meeting new friends, having new adventures, exploring the world around me and I love the opportunity to travel.

My mom isn’t sure how she can pay for me to go to Japan since she is also saving money to send me on the 8th grade trip to Washington, DC during 2015 spring break.  It’s hard for her to provide all the things that she feels would help me become a well-rounded young man, graduate high school with honors so I can go t a good college and stay out of trouble.  Since my dad died in 2012, I try not to ask her for too much because I know how hard it is for her to take care of me and provide me with a nice home.  I know she would be proud that I was proactive and solved my fundraising issue by myself (with a little help posting from my aunt). After all, isn’t that what Boy Scouts is all about: being prepared and self-motivated?

When I grow up I would like to be an engineer.  That might be hard since I struggle in math but I am trying very hard to bring up my grade. Otherwise, I get pretty good grades, especially in science. I also play basketball. This year I was invited to play on the high school team even though I am still in the 8th grade. By challenging myself to play at that higher level , I think I improved much more than if I had played with other boys my age. I’d like to continue with basketball, improve my skills in fencing and continue to serve my community through Boys Scouts. As a matter of fact, earlier this week, I returned home from a 20-mile hike/overnight camping trip, quickly took a shower and then rushed out the door to go feed the homeless. And that was just on Monday.

Thanks for reading my story. I will return every few weeks and give an update on my progress and preparation. I’ll also share details about my trip to Washington, DC. I appreciate any contributions for my trip to Japan.

Thanks in advance for your support!
