Hello and greeting's to everyone who comes across this story. This is a story about inspiration. It will inspire you to care about other people and most important it will inspire you to care about yourself. If you are not okay then the people who depend on you won't be okay, so you have to take time out to care for yourself. This story of inspiration began August 10th, 1999 when my only son Qamari Hassan was born. I was a young single mother and now I was raising a young boy. My first instints was to make sure that he was introduced to sports. One of Qamari's first words was ball and he would repeat "ball, ball, ball" over and over again. His older sister and I would just laugh. Qamari started playing on his first basketball team when he was 4 years old. He would grab the ball and slide across the floor, he wasnt to intrested in making the baskets back then.

Qamari played many sports throughout his whole life sometimes he played  two diffrent sports at the same time. I would attend as many practices and games as I possibly could but he began to wear me out. So when he got into highschool my life partner (Marcus) and I told him that he had to choose between football and basketball because we could only afford to send him to special camps and training for one sport. He choose football and we became part of the AWP sports training family. AWP stands for athletics with purpose and I am forever grateful to them for helping guide Qamari's purpose in sports. Qamari was also a part of  My Brother's Keeper which also helped to guide his character and inforced the values that we were teaching him at home.

Qamari broke his ankle on both sides his junior year and had to sit out the whole season. He never let the thought come into his head that this situation would stop him from reaching his first long term goal. From as early as his metro football years Qamari wanted to attend Saint Francis University. Other schools came into his mind and people tried to convince him to leave Fort Wayne but it never worked. He was the first to commit to Saint Francis from our city and that made him very proud. Qamari couldn't wait from collge football practices to start. I was dreading it because Qamari was 17 and had his permit, he wouldn't get his license until the end of the summer. So, I had to take him at 5 am and pick him up at 7 am three times a week. It was a long summer for me but well worth it because I witnessed determination and skill in my child.

Aug. 25th was the very last summer practice before his freshman year in college would officially begin. He was excited to say the least and had gotten some pretty good news right before he made his last ever play in collge football. Qamari had helmet to chin contact while making a tackle. His neck snapped back and he hit the ground. He was out for a few minutes. When he came to he couldnt move or feel his body. The USF trainers were amazing at their job and got him in an ambulance on his way to the hospital.

When I got the call to come to the hospital I did'nt know that my life would make such a tremendous change and that Qamari's life would never be the same. We had to make the decision to have surgery that could have no impact, result in death, or take away some of the bruising from around his spine. Qamari is now recovering from being completely paralyzed. We were in the hospital for two months. I was'nt able to work, attend my college classes, or even sleep for that matter in the begening. I was alert to my son's every need. My    natural insttinct told me to keep him moving and play close attention to everything. Everyday I realized more and more that I was living in a miracle. That I should only see the beauty in the fact that my son is still living. I had to believe that my son has a purpose and that I have a purpose as well but we have to do the work to keep him moving. Along this journey Qamari has faced his worst fears and it has been my responiblity to remind him that he is also conquering his worst fears everyday when he decides to never give up.

Qamari began showing signs of controlled movement right after surgery. His diagnosis is incomplete because the situation is to delicate to come to any conclusions. That means that we can only except that he will make a complete recovery. So we worked hard at the hospital and we are working even harder at home. Qamari and I spent two months in the hospital. I played music and we danced many nights to keep our spirits up. I put all of his best wishes cards that people sent all over his hospital rooms walls. I had to make his enviroment as much like home as possible for both of our sanity. We came home to our new house Oct. 14th.

In this short two months our family has had to rent a new house because our previous home wasn't wheelchair accessible. Marcus is the only one that can work because I have to stay home with Qamari and we are commited to being his personal nurses and physical therapist. We have went from 3 incomes and less exspenses to 1 income with more exspenses. I am asking you all to donate because of our families finacial situation and also becuase Qamari plans to use his life as inspiration to others by being more involved in the our community.

He is a fighter and I believe that God will always make a way when you follow him and do hard works.I want to set Qamari up where he doesn't have to worry about anything but getting to the good works that he is destined to do in the future. We all are here for a bigger purpose than ourselves and our family understands that now. We ask for help in our time of need so that we can return the compassion during and after this triumph. Qamari's story was told by Rex Smith and can be found on www.fortwaynenbc.com it is called, "The Longest Yard".
