Help Alicia go BACK to Peru!
Hello everyone! My name is Alicia and I'm a graduating senior at Morgan State University. This past December, I was blessed to go to Iquitos, Peru for ten days to participate in a life changing internship. The program run by the Tropical Pathology and Infectious Disease Association (TPaIDA) immersed me and my fellow interns into a world we couldn't have possibly imagined.
While at Hospital Apoyo Iquitos, I assisted in a C-section delivery of a baby boy, observed a hysterectomy, an appendectomy and various treatment for trauma patients in the emergency room. On our fifth day, we visited a small town called Belèn where we observed the unsanitary conditions of the open air market and some residential areas. One of the most exciting experiences in my life was when we ventured into the Amazon Jungle and met people from an indigenous tribe called the Yaguas. My group and I hiked two hours into the jungle to deliver Christmas gifts to the children of a remote village. The villagers gave us their best fruits as a welcome gift. We sang Christmas songs and played soccer with the children. My time there was something I will never forget!
Earlier this month (January), I was invited back to Peru, but to participate in TPaIDA's more intense program in Cusco, Peru! This trip is about a week long but much more hands on. The total amount of money I need to raise including tuition and the round trip flight is $2,500. I am beyond excited to participate in this opportunity AGAIN and am willing to work hard to raise the funds necessary to make this trip possible!
