Doan Oliver Hoffmann Memorial Fund

Donation protected
Doan Oliver Hoffmann left us too soon, on January 22nd. Me miss him very much.

He passed in New York City, at 625 East 14th Street, the apartment that had been his home almost continuously since 1978, interrupted only by his 4-year master in carpentry study in Germany, and a stint in Delaware. Doan was a true New Yorker.

Younger son to Uta, only brother to Kaya, his absence leaves us heartbroken. He was an extraordinarily gifted craftsman, a vigorous and tenacious debater who was endlessly curious about the world, and one of the most considerate and loyal souls one could meet.

The depth and variety of his artistic output  is only truly coming into view as we go through his things and take care of his affairs. In time, we will endeavor to show his work in retrospective collections online, in print and on exhibit.

Our immediate obligation is to take care of things for Doan, so that he can really rest in peace. His (Turkish, "doğan") name means 'the falcon, the one who is born to be free.'

To this end, time and money are limited resources we are faced with. We are reaching out and asking for help.

We are vacating our apartment of 40 years. Mother is here from Germany, brother from Seattle, supported by friends who have been and will be helping. We are downsizing as much as we can in the short time horizon of February 28th. What isn’t gifted, donated to charity or recycled, will be headed to Seattle, where Kaya will continue to methodically sort and archive.

Our costs are yet unknown. This fund is primarily to help us to be able to absorb surprises that we find in Doan’s debts or obligations, as well as covering moving costs. We will adjust our goal as our needs come into sharper focus. Kaya will be managing the disbursement; Uta would have extra logistical challenges doing it from back in Germany after the 28th.

This platform will allow for donations based on your country, using a credit or debit card.

If you prefer a direct bank transfer to Uta's German account, the information is as follows:

Commerzbank Köln
Girokonto
IBAN: DE46370400440163933500
BIC: COBADEFFXXX

We have reached out in other ways with updates to our plans for selebrating Doan's life, and to request photos, writings, recollections, etc. Please email us at f[email redacted], and you'll get a replay back with more information.

In gratitude,
Uta & Kaya
