Do You Hear What I Hear?

Do You Hear What I Hear? A Digital Soundscape Installation : Exploring Deafness

Funding Proposal

I am an artist in Taos, New Mexico. I am also Hard of Hearing (HOH). I live and work in the small town of Taos, New Mexico.

When people hear the word "disability", they generally tend to think of someone in a wheelchair. Our disability is invisible, and because of this, we suffer an often-times painful disconnect from within our own community. We feel a social isolation that is not understood by the general, hearing, public.

Do You Hear What I Hear? is an interactive visual and sound installation that will help to educate the general public to the large scope of Deafness. For every Deaf or Hard of Hearing person, there is a distinctive audiogram. We will use these individual audiograms to digitally manipulate a soundscape; be it a song playing on the radio, friends talking to one another, children playing in the park, birds singing, workspace sounds, the aural acoustics of a party.

The installation is interactive in that the general public can approach each standing photo replica of a Deaf or Hard of Hearing person, put on a pair of headphones, and experience a bit of what that specific person does every day.

The general public is then able to experience, in a small way, how each person experiences the world of sound and Deafness.

Funds raised would be used in the following ways: To photograph and to create life-sized images of Deaf and hard of hearing people who would like to be a part of the project. To digitally create a soundscape of what each person's aural reality consists of. To purchase headsets and digital storage devices for each sculpture. To create copies of each audiogram, written project details, and educational materials.

The Pollination Project  has already funded $1,000.00 towards these goals! And our project, Do You Hear What I Hear? will be mentioned in  The Huffington Post

If I can receive enough funding for this project I would love for this art installation to travel across the U.S. and abroad.
