Devan Sprayberry's Medical Fund

Donation protected
On Thursday night June 1 2017 our brother, friend, confidant, and shining light Devan Sprayberry was involved in a motor cycle accident that left him bleeding internally and requiring life flight to Grady Memorial Hospital.

Anyone who has ever met Devan knows how bright of a light he shines on the world. His laughter is unique and beyond infectious. He always has time for anyone who needs him, whether you need help moving or just a sympathetic ear to listen to your problems he was there. Devan loves God, his church, life, being out in the mix of things, and being a Navy Reservist serving as a Hospital Corpsman. College has been exciting for him and his fraternity, Delta Sigma Phi, has been a constant source of conversation.

Devan entered surgery some time around 1-2 AM the Friday following his accident and was in surgery for aroud 4-5 hours. His liver suffered several lacerations which were cauterized to stop bleeding, and his adrenal gland suffered quite a bit of damage as well. He also broke his collar bone and a few ribs which are causing complications with his right lung. We found out that he eventally went into Renal Failure, but the internal bleeding was stopped. As of yesterday, 6/4/2017,
they attempted to close his stomach but they werent able to close it after the surgery due to swelling. They will try again on Tuesday June 6th but we dont know what time yet. With all the blood (36+ units) and hyrdration he has required plus the trauma he is quite swollen. If we can get his kidneys funtioning properly again he can start passing fluids more rapidly, the swelling will go down and we can get his stomach closed.
This next part is pretty hard to say. We as a family have been trying to come to terms with this but I dont think this is something that you get used to.

Devan had been having trouble feeling/moving his legs and feet since his surgery. They decided to do an MRI and what first appeared to be fluid on his spine turned out to be a spinal stroke. He essentially lost blood flow to to his spine for some time as his body struggled to keep his vital organs alive/while his blood pressure dipped very low during the trauma and transport to the hospital.
The status of his moblity will not be able to be fully assesed until his stomach can be closed and he can come out from under heavy sedation. Right now the plan is to move him to the ShepherdCenter to rehabilitate his spine and get him moblie again. We are continuing to pray and hope. We dont want to use the "P" word because if anyone can pull through this it will be Devan. Unfortunately, the prognosis from the neuro surgeon wasnt very optimistic.

We have been unable to verify his medical insurance status at this point. With multiple surgeries, trauma ICU, and hopefully transferring to the Shepherd Center we expect his medical costs to be astronomical.

We know everyone has their own burdens and such but we feel gathering funds for Devan needs to start immediately. Devan hasnt been awake to be told the extent of his injuries and we will need to give him a week or so to heal and come to terms with things before we let people back to see him when he wakes up.

This Friday our family would like to have a meet and greet with family, friends, co workers, etc who still havent been able to see Devan. Due to the severity of his condition his visitation has been limited to zero to keep the risk for infection down and allow him maxiumum rest. The meet and greet will be Friday June 9th 2017 8-10 PM in the main lobby/ground floor of the south Tower at Grady Memorial Hospital.

We've had multiple offers of cards, balloons, gift baskets, food etc. In lieu of these things and considering the significant medical expenses he is going to encounter we ask that you dontate here instead of sending gifts. At this point any amount helps, and we look forward to meeting as many people as possible Friday night so that we can get to know the people Devan has had an impact on during his journey in life thus far. We will have a poster board, or four knowing Devan for people to sign so he can see who all came to show their support. Thank you so much for reading this, please help us share this so that we can get Devan back on the road to a normal and productive life.
