David Staggs Medical/Financial Needs

Donation protected
David Staggs is in need of financial assistance for a critical illness and personal tragedy.

Having survived necrotizing pancreatitis involving 7 major surgeries in 2014, a new and frightening diagnosis leaves him unable to work.

Guillain-Barre' Syndrome has caused paralysis and seizures. Unable to walk, talk, breathe independently, unable to live pain-free, David has been in Community North Hospital ICU, Kindred Hospital Indpls, and Eskenazi Hospital Indpls beginning 7/29/2016.

As if it weren't enough that he's spent the past 100 days in a hospital, fighting for his life and health, personal tragedy has also struck. A tragedy that should never happen to a young man flat on his back in a hospital bed.

The back-story: David Staggs is a 2003 Wapahani High School graduate, and has also received a BS degree from Ball State University. 2 yrs later he received his MA in Sociology.

Within 2 weeks he was in severe pain and was taken to Community Hospital Anderson. He received a heart-breaking diagnosis of Necrotizing Pancreatitis from a gallstone lodged in his pancreas. Surgery followed but his organs were shutting down. Transfer to Community North Hospital Indpls was made ahead David was placed under the care of Dr Thomas Howard. 7 surgeries and 185 days later, David walked out of Community North.

18 months later David achieved a position of Adjunct Professor of Sociology at BSU, teaching online Sociology classes.

2 years after walking out of Community North Hospital, a new set of symptoms sent David to the ER at IU Health Ball Memorial Hospital in Muncie, IN. Frequent vomiting, pain, and in David's words to his Dad "You don't understand, Dad, I can't walk--my legs don't work". IUBMH thought his new illness was connected to the 2014 illness so transferred him back to Community North Hospital. 3 days later it was discovered David was paralyzed in his neck, arms & legs, and later found, his diaphragm.

Further exams and tests resulted in a diagnosis of Guillain-Barre' Syndrome. He was placed on life support and has been ever since. GBS is AKA the "ground-up" disease as it begins at the feet and paralyzes from the feet up. Fortunately, it can reverse, from the top down. But this recovery is agonizingly slow (many months to many years), horribly painful, emotionally devastating, financially catastrophic for him and his family.

These health crises began June 14, 2014, and July 29, 2016, and continues. Any financial help you can give is greatly needed and will be much appreciated.  Please share this link with Wapahani or Ball State alumni, family, friends, churches, prayer groups, philantropic organizations.

Please make a donation here on the GoFundMe site, as a convenient way to help. There are administrative fees of 5% (GoFundMe) and 2.5% (WePay).
