Help David Out of Homelessness

I see the yard signs around our beautiful neighborhood: “Black Lives Matter and Love is Love”. Today there is an opportunity to lend a hand to one of our neighbors. Many of you recognize David Majak who has been, until late, a relatively constant presence at Wallingford and 45th. He is a sweet young man with a shocking history. Before becoming homeless, he was a third year student at University of Washington, and before that a foster child in Tacoma, and before that one of the Lost Boys of Sudan living in a refugee camp in Kenya. David witnessed unspeakable violence as a young boy. In 2001, the United States welcomed 3,800 young Sudanese refugees. Many have been successful in their new country, while others have suffered setbacks. I got to know David by stopping to chat from time to time like many of you, and then one day asked him how I could help.  

David is now on his way out of homelessness. He is a patient at Neighborcare Health at 45th Street and the Community Psychiatric Clinic on Stone Way. He has been accepted to the Aloha Inn transitional housing and is now waiting for a room. After a short hospitalization in December, I didn’t have the heart to put David back on the sidewalk so I checked him into a motel. Since December 14, I have paid for his motel room and helped David with food and other expenses. As we wait for a room to become available, I would welcome any contributions to help David sleep off the streets for perhaps another six weeks. I am trying to raise $2,000 for approximately six weeks of housing and another $1,000 to pay for his citizenship application and other expenses.  If you know David and would like to help him on his way to “Aloha” please contribute.
