We, as a family, are reaching out to all of our friends, family and acquaintances this holiday season. As you enjoy this holiday with your healthy grandparents, parents, siblings, children and cousins, please think of David, keep him in your thoughts, say a prayer and, if you are able, please help us through a contribution to this GoFundMe.
David is 27 and since birth has struggled with Cystic Fibrosis (https://www.cff.org/What-is-CF/About-Cystic-Fibrosis/ ). When born, we were told not to expect him to live to school age! Every day since diagnosed, he has been subjected to constant doctor visits, many medications, undergone treatments, machines to help him get a bit more air into his lungs, as well as multiple hospital visits.
For those who know David, growing up he always tried to appear strong, but inside he was fighting a one-man battle with this horrible disease. His candor and wit in the midst of all he goes through on a daily basis is truly an inspiration.
While at the beginning of 2014 he was told he was not sick enough to qualify for a lung transplant, that all changed in August 2015. One of his lungs partially collapsed and never recovered. With his current lung capacity at a mere 20%, every breath David takes is a struggle.
This holiday season we were blessed to receive word that David now qualifies for a double-lung transplant and has been placed on the active donor registry. Our hope, now, is that a proper donor match can be found in time.
This double-lung transplant will encompass a minimum of half a year out of work, where David will be hospitalized, require round-the-clock care, or will be recuperating all while dealing with the anti-rejection medication used to suppress his own immune system so it does not reject the donor lungs.(https://www.cff.org/Living-with-CF/Treatments-and-Therapies/ )
As you can imagine, this will cause a large financial strain and any monetary amount raised through this GoFundMe will assist the family in ensuring that all of David's needs, medical or otherwise, are met.
It was Richard M. DeVos of Amway that said, "Few things in the world are more powerful than a positive push. A smile. A world of optimism and hope. A "you can do it" when things are tough. This is a quote that hangs on my wall that I reference daily.
Times for our family have been tough over the years and soon will be tougher as we go through this lung transplant journey.
Be that smile, that positive push, that world of hope and optimism, because we know we can do it, but we'd rather do it with the love and support of those who know and love David!
