Having recognized the need for Black and Latino young men in Los Angeles to develop digital literacy and the entrepreneurial mindset and the need to provide technology to address the technology gap, the Broome Family Foundation started the David A. Broome Summer Business Institute in 2011 at the University of Southern California (USC).

The purpose of the Summer Business Institute is to teach Black and Latino youth in grades 9-12 digital literacy, the entrepreneurial mindset, self-responsibility, sound decision making skills, and community involvement. The purpose is accomplished by combining instruction in software coding with project based entrepreneurship curriculum and including a mentorship component to the program.

Students will be taught the following:

-Business plan development

-Return on money invested

-Web Development

-Sales and Marketing Skills

-Product Design and sourcing

-Communication, relationship building, networking

-Critical Thinking

The Summer Business Institute serves low income youth of promise, primarily Black and Latino youth, of the greater Los Angeles area who have demonstrated an interest in becoming the business leaders that will power the local economy and build jobs and opportunities for their peers and the next generation. It will take place for 9 Saturdays from June to August on the USC campus.

The money raised will go towards paying for materials such as laptop computers for each scholar, transportation to field trips, food, coding software, SBI staff, and $500 scholarship for the top scholar.

Every dollar counts, whether you can give $1, $100, or $1,000, no contribution is too big or too small. We hope that you can partner with us in making the David A. Broome Summer Business Institute possible for 60 more scholars this Summer.

Sincerely,
