David's medical needs

Donation protected
David is my wonderful husband of fifty five years and the father to our three children.   Family and friends are the center of his life.   Over the years, David's health has decline a lot.   He has been a diabetic for 25 years with all the problems that creates.  At this time he uses 2 different insulins and they are covered by our insurance as are his other 16 medications.

Currently he is experiencing an increase in his COPD as well as the interstitial lung disease.  He is not a candidate for surgery or transplants because of age and overall health conditions.  His biggest need currently is a portable oxygen concentrator.  This would enable us to plug it into the car, run it on batteries or plug it into a house current.  It would mean an end to all the oxygen tanks we now use and carry when traveling anywhere.

Medicare considers this an upgrade of his current oxygen equipment and not a new piece of equipment.  It will be September of 2019 before they will allow him to purchase it under their guidelines.  We have contacted everyone in the Medicare office as well as Department of Human Services, Southern Maine Area on Aging and yes, even our senators.   Medicare has the final say in the matter.  After 27 pages of notes and conversations with 15 people, the answer is still - September 2019!!

He has the backpack portable oxygen system but because of back problems, cannot use as intended.  He must carry it by hand at all times.  It uses a C tank of oxygen which lasts about 2 hours.  We live 1 1/2 hours one way from his doctors so one can imagine what our vehicle looks like with all the tanks lined up. His other piece of equipment is house concentrator on wheels that he supposed to drag behind him along with the O2 tubing.  Because of this equipment we are unable to travel beyond doctor appointments.  We cannot visit family or friends unless they can come to us.  This is very hard on him emotionally as family is very important to both of us.

For the past year he has been sleeping in the living room in a recliner as he cannot breathe lying down on a regular bed.  The recliner does not allow him to move or roll over in the night.  It is the making for a stiff body in the morning.  Another blow is that because of the breathing problems, he loses his driver’s license Friday.  He is trying to cope with all the changes, keep a little of his humor and smile.  Some days are very difficult.  It breaks my heart to see him like this.

Any monies raised will immediately get him the concentrator he really needs.  Any extra will get him an elevated bed that will enable him to once again sleep in our bedroom.
We are a proud, hardworking couple who could just use a little help.
Any donation would be very much appreciated. Please accept our deepest thanks for any contribution.
