Medical Expenses WheelChair

Donation protected

My name is Darren Johansen I currently live in Campbell River, Canada. Where I was born and raised. I am a 39 year old father of 4 kids. I use to be a faller and a standing stem logger for Heli-logging. It was a dangerous job. I was in a bad car accident 5 years ago, this change my live forever. In my single vehicle accident I broke my neck and now I am a quadriplegic in a wheelchair. I am trying to raise money to pay for Medical expensive and to do some repair work on my wheelchair.
It's amazing how many people would think that I had receive a lot of money from my car accident, but truth is medical expenses and the wheel chair do not come cheap! I have tried to pay for all this on my own but living on a fixed income has made this almost impossible. I am a proud man, but with this accident I have learned that sometimes, it's okay to ask for help. So that is what I'm asking! Please help if you can and if not please share. Fixing my chair can help to prevent any more pressure sore from occurring again.

                              THIS IS MY STORY

Before my accident I was a very good tree climber. My uncle had taught me how to log and how to fall tree and how to do this job safely that I did for about 15 years. It was a very physical and very rewarding job. With standing stem logger I got to travel a lot. I was able to travel up and down the coast and even traveled to the States to put on a demonstration show in front of a couple hundred people. They were able to watch and see what it takes to be a standing stem logger.

                             Very Cool experience.

                              MY VIDEO I MADE!!!

I had my accident on March 19, 2009. I was traveling on the highway heading to Storey's Creek and I had hit some black ice losing control of my vehicle. The condition of the road was just right for my truck to flipped and landed on to the beach ripping the roof off my truck. The force of the impact was so great that I was thrown out of the truck landing on a log on the beach and breaking my neck and shearing off one of my ear.

They were able to reattach it with a new technique using leaches. Considering it was totally ripped off they did a great job on reattaching it. It look normal unless you take a really good look at it.

I was in Vancouver General Hospital for about 3 months before I was moved to GF Strong Rehabilitation Centre in Vancouver. Where I stayed for about 10 months. Where I worked on my strength train and how to deal with my new world.

My kids would come over as much as possible to visit me. Which was very uplifting and very encouraging.

After GF Strong I took the long way home. Going back to Vancouver General Hospital with a case of Pneumonia . Where I stay for about 2 months. (In a room about the size of a walk in closet) I was then transferred to Nanaimo General Hospital where I was able to go outside again by myself :) I was then transfer home to Campbell River Hospital. Where I waited for a room to open up at New Horizons.  Where I currently live.

My family and kids come over all the time to visit. My Kids mostly come over to play video games, but it is just really nice to have them come over and spent time with me.

It's often easy for someone to overlook your disability, as long as you have the ability to keep trying. I heard once that only weak man will ask for help. I firmly believe that a man is wise if he can asks for help. A wise man know what he needs in life and wise enough to know how to get it. No man can make it through life without getting a little help, it does not matter if you're able-body or not. It is a fact of life that we all will need a little help at one point or another in life. This is a point in my life where I am asking for your help. The help that you provide me will give me the chance to live a more independent life so that I can be a great father to my 4 kids.
