South Africa Study Abroad Program

As some of you may know, this last Fall I began my junior year at Western Washington University as a transfer student majoring in Sociology and minoring in International Studies.
Recently, I received acceptance into a USAC study abroad program in Stellenbosch, South Africa for the summer of 2018. Stellenbosch University embodies a “science-for-society” mindset with the goal of working towards ending poverty and other human rights violations as well as improving overall public health, safety, and environmental sustainability. Not only will this program fulfill academic credits I need for my International Studies minor, but the courses I’m taking on South African political history, the HIV/AIDS epidemic, democratic consolidation, and poverty and unemployment will add a global context to my major of Sociology. Professionally, I plan to pursue a career that works towards ending the global humanitarian crisis and $150 billion industry of human trafficking.
Experiencing life in another country and culture is crucial in understanding global crimes such as sex trafficking, and this program will help expand my knowledge and stretch my comfort zone. Between applying for scholarships and working part-time, I hope to be able to cover some of the cost. However, I am also paying my way through college, and paying tuition Spring quarter will deplete most of my remaining savings. I've never started a GoFundMe page, but I figured if any experience was worth reaching out to friends, family, and peers about, this is it. I appreciate any assistance (whether that be financial assistance, emotional support, and/or advice) as I prepare for my first time living in a foreign country.
