Daniel Bingham Family Support Fund

Some people make you a better person for just having known them. Dr. Daniel Bingham is one of those people, a man who has worked his whole life to try to improve the world around him. He is an avid outdoorsman, a dedicated family man, an inspiring mentor, a patient counselor, and an unassuming friend. Most of all, he is an incredible soul who has blessed the lives of many.

After twelve years as Dean/CEO of Helena College University of Montana, Daniel Bingham followed his calling to spend three years in Australia managing 170 missionaries for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints. On February 14, Daniel was out for an early morning bicycle ride with a friend and crashed into a fence at a very high speed, knocking him unconscious. When his friend found him, he immediately administered CPR and called for medical help. Thankfully, Daniel was revived and taken directly to a hospital in North Sydney renowned for its neuro and spinal specialty.

Once he was stabilized, MRI images showed a break in his neck at the C2 spine. By some miracle, the spinal cord was not severed. A surgical team gathered to operate, placing pins in his neck and attempting to relieve spinal swelling. The following day, Daniel was somewhat responsive, able to blink and nod slightly, but not showing any other body movement.

Daniel is currently in the North Sydney ICU where it was estimated he would need to stay for 2-3 months. As of this post, he is able to raise and extend his right knee and has movement in toes. His breathing has imrpoved, but is still being assisted. Due to the breathing tube, he is unable to speak; however, he is able to communicate by mouthing words. He tires easily, but is alert and attentive and continues to make progress every day.

Daniel and his wife Donna have four adult children and numerous grandchildren who all live in the States. At this time, one of their daughters has gone to Sydney to help support Donna and to be there for her dad. Pending progress, it is likely he'll be tranported to Salt Lake City within a week or two. This will be a huge blessing, allowing family and friends to visit and provide support.

This GoFundMe account was set up by concerned friends on the other side of the world who feel incredibly helpless and long to serve someone who served us for so long and in so many ways.  Our hope is to raise funds to make things easier for Daniel and the family that means everything to him – be it helping purchase plane tickets, covering medical expenses, helping with rehabilitation expenses as he heals, and really whatever else the family could possibly need.

So many of us owe so much to this man. In so many ways, he has touched us and restored our faith in humanity and goodness. He restored our faith in ourselves. Now, we have the opportunity give something back, to offer our support, love, and prayers.

Thank you.
