Hello! I am Dana.
I'm a Licensed Professional Counselor, Writer/Blogger, and 1st-time author who loves to dance :-)
I have been thinking about going to Africa for the past few years. The continent itself has been "calling" my heart for a long time, but I made excuses as to why I should not go. I kept telling myself, "'Wait until every thing is perfect." And now, I have waited over 3 years.
I very recently realized that my excuses were rooted in fear of the unknown. I cannot wait anymore. If I do, my old excuses will turn into new ones, and soon I will have waited all my life. I have decided to act now while the opportunity is Golden.
Why do I want to go? Part of the reason is to learn about the cultures, connect with the people, and see the best ways that I can use my skills and gifts to serve them. Another part of the reason is because my Spirit keeps bringing me back to this "calling", to the point where everything else that was not in alignment with it was stripped away.
Just a few short months ago, I was working full-time in a typical job, doing work that I was not very happy doing. I kept feeling unfulfilled and tried to force myself to see the positives. I kept feeling like I needed to leave, but I ignored it. Somewhat suprisingly, my contract in that position was terminated.
Instead of being shocked and afraid, I cheered and felt relieved.
You see, earlier that week I had started sharing with many others about my desire to travel to Africa. By the end of that week, I had connected with a family that lives in Ghana and was willing to let me stay with them! There is so much more to this miraculous story. Why am I asking for assistance with this journey?
There are logistical things that I have to do before I can leave, and while I am there. The family in Ghana is willing to let me stay with them for two months (without having to pay them). I recently met with them while they were traveling in the States. Some of the family members are actually from the US and have chosen to live abroad to fulfill their callings, so they understand and want me to have time to adjust to the culture, to visit other parts of the continent, and to explore my calling.
By the way, not only do I have an opportunity to visit Ghana, but I also have a chance to go to Nigeria as well (if it is safe to do so).
How can you help? First, I need Visas for each country. I also need to get immunization shots (which are not covered by insurance). For the time that I will be there, I would need additional monetary resources in order to travel safely within the countries, to purchase food/items, and to take care of any medical needs/emergencies that may arise. Also, I plan to document my experience using social media outlets so that others can see/read about my journey and possibly be inspired. (Internet access costs money)
In case you are wondering: I will be using my own funds that I have set aside to take care of the things that I will leave behind when I am traveling (e.g. car, home, etc.).
*This is my long-term dream, which you would be helping me to create:
I envision myself working as a mentor with young women and girls (especially those who have been sex-trafficked/abused). I see myself traveling to other countries around the continent and providing inspiring educational seminars to small gatherings of young adults, children, and families. I picture myself sharing my Light, Knowledge, and Love with groups of people who desire to grow, while also learning more about myself and growing as well.
