In this ever-changing modern landscape, there are some things San Franciscans can always count on, including an unmatched-anywhere-else cast of lovable locals and... earthquakes. Right now, preparation for the latter is threatening the very sort of beloved local haunt that makes this city great — and we’re calling on friends far and wide to help save it.
If you’ve had the pleasure of sharing a bottle (or several) of wine and conversation at Robberbaron, you understand its value. The small space is “home” to one of the largest families around, largely thanks to its sassy, neighborly proprietor, Lucrecia (“Luc”) Torres. Luc doesn’t just run a bar. She’s created a home away from home for many, and played matchmaker and consoler of broken hearts, “baby rocker” and dog sitter along the way. Says one regular, “ I’ve seen Luc step in when a date is going poorly and I’ve seen her invite someone who looked lonely at one end of the bar to join a table of regulars so they too found a home.”
Luc and her establishment represent the best of San Francisco. The reason we still live here. In March, they must close for at least five months to undergo a city-mandated seismic retrofit. Business can be hard even in the best of times, but relaunching after months (much less paying staff, who are just as integral to making Robberbaron as special as it is) feels near impossible.
But here is something else we know about San Franciscans: We rally around important causes. That’s why friends of Robberbaron are asking you to Drop, Cover, and Donate. Anything you can contribute will help keep this wonderful haunt alive once the building is earthquake safe. And it’s just the sort of San Francisco treasure we can’t afford to lose.
