A Quest for Relief for Dance Quest International

Costumes in boxes, props in storage, empty classrooms, silent speakers. This is the reality of an empty dance studio. These are truly unprecedented times. From the beginning, we have been on a quest to change the face of dance, but that incomplete mission is in jeopardy. The health, safety, and well-being of our dance families and staff remain our top priority and responsibility, so we have been trying to find the best balance for all impacted by the current mandated closure and the future reopening of our dance studio. This GoFundMe effort, launched out of sheer necessity, is seeking to raise the same amount we requested through the SBA loan program. It encompasses the current losses as well as projected revenue loss that we expect as we face a staggered reopening with ongoing restrictions in Florida.

In the spirit of transparency, here are the hard facts. We decided to keep our studio operating via recorded digital and live Zoom classes online instead of shutting our doors like so many other studios. That meant increased payroll costs as we conquered the technology learning curve. At the same time, our revenues dropped dramatically because many of our families experienced job loss, and we discounted tuition for the month of May across the board. Dance Quest applied for the PPP loan through the Small Business Administration on the first day it became available, April 3, 2020. We just learned this week that our application was denied because we use the dance industry standard for paying our staff as 1099 contracts, not W-4 employees. We attempted to do the right thing by keeping our studio going virtually, preserving the progress the students had made and keeping our valued staff paid and working. It has not been enough.

We do not take this process lightly, and have poured hours of work and prayer into continuing the mission of Dance Quest International. Our desire is to come out of this crisis stronger and more determined than ever, even though we know the reality is that it could put us out of business. Thank you to all of our dance families who have so diligently plugged into our virtual classes with enthusiasm and patience! Thank you to our staff who have poured all of their creativity into teaching in a manner that is SO different from everything you know! Thank you to our friends and family who have offered uplifting words of encouragement and prayers for us! Thank YOU for taking the time to read our story. We are praying for each of you and your families during this challenging time as well.
