A Type 1 Diabetic.

I am the most blessed and supported person I know.  I have never wanted for anything, and received more love in my pinky finger than most will receive in their lifetime. Adversity is something I've been fortunate to avoid, and even when I was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes in May of 2015 (at age 34), I found an amazing amount of strength and courage to overcome the challenges that accompanied this disease.

While living alone with type 1 diabetes is absolutely manageable, I have become increasingly more aware of my fear of being alone. For some diabetics, they are quick to recognize a low or high blood sugar reading, however for me, I find it difficult to identify.  For these reasons, and many more, I have applied for, and was selected to receive, a Diabetic Alert Dog (DAD).

Having a DAD will not only provide me with a companion and friend, but can also potentially save my life.  DAD’s are trained to alert/ "paw" their owners when sugars are at an unsafe level, and even wake their owner up from sleep if their numbers drop too low (which is a huge fear for most diabetics who are insulin dependent).

As you can imagine, having such an incredible service comes at a cost. To purchase a Diabetic Alert Dog will cost $11,000.  While I have the ability to cover $3,000, it is still a fairly large expense that I cannot quite afford.

Trust me when I say that asking for money is a more difficult task than actually living with the diabetes.  It’s something I’m not comfortable doing, and makes me feel incredibly selfish.  I have no idea if I can get enough financial support to purchase a DAD, but can assure you that if I cannot meet my goal of $8,000, I will be donating all funds received to the JDRF.

I want to thank you in advance for all the support you have given me, whether it be reading my page, sharing my story, making a financial contribution, or simply praying for me.

"Ask, and it will be given to you; seek, and you will find; knock, and it will be opened to you.  Matthew 7:7
