Hello my name is Dwight McDonald, Jr. I am over the Girl's Basketball Program at Crawford High School in San Diego, CA. I am also proud to say that I am a Crawford Alum. This is my first year as the Head Coach of this team but I am entering my 15th year of coaching girl's basketball(13 years @ Crawford) My father, Dwight McDonald, Sr., recently retired from coaching last year and I am now given the opportunity to continue what he has started. In my 13 years at Crawford I have worked with my father to help set a firm foundation for the girls basketball program. Together we have changed the culture of the team and brought a sense of pride back to this program. We emphasize respect, academics and hard work in all facets of life. Many of our students-athletes have no athletic experience and some were new to the country. But, we are proud to say that many of these young ladies graduated with a 3.0 GPA or higher and have gone on to become productive members of society by way of a college education, military, or trade. Last year, on the court, we capped everything off by leading these young ladies to the Division 4 CIF Championship game for the 1st time in school history!
I have teamed up with the Crawford High Foundation to created this Gofundme account because there are two areas that, no matter how much we have done over the years, we continue to fight. The first and major issue is transportation. As coaches , we are required to transport our student athletes to and from games. You may ask, "Where are the parents?". Most of our student athletes live in single parent homes and the parents are working to support there families. Some of the parents may not have vehicles themselves. The school district does not have the budget for buses so the coaches must make 2 to 3 trips per game. We need your help! We will use $3,000 of the $6,000 for our transportation needs(buses) this year.
The second issue deals with the personal needs of our students athletes as it relate to there safety on the court. Most of the student at Crawford live below the poverty line and do not have the fund to purchase the proper equipment to play and prevent injury. Things such as: proper basketball shoes, ankle braces, knee braces, and a host of other personal items are needed so all of our sutdent athletes can have a fun and safe experience while playing high school basketball. We will use the remaining $3,000 to provide this equipment to all of our athletes. With your help we are looking to reach this goal by the end of October!
As a coach, I have and will continue to do all that I can to support these student -athletes, but this current need goes beyond the scope of my pocketbook ,so I am asking for your help.
