Hurricane Maria is regarded as the largest natural disaster to hit Puerto Rico. Nearly six months later, 150,000 residents and businesses are still without power. Thousands lost their homes and infrastructure was destroyed. With my Spanish skills, energetic spirit and strong back, I feel compelled to spend my school vacation helping rebuild the devastated island.
I'm thrilled that my application was accepted by All Hands and Hearts – Smart Response to volunteer from their base in Yabucoa. Maria was the strongest when it made landfall in the Yabucoa area, and residents there were devastated. Their mission is to help families affected by natural disasters recover faster by rebuilding safe homes, schools, and infrastructure with the help of volunteers like me.
For three weeks, I will be working with relief crew leaders to help Puerto Ricans rebuild. Also, I hope to teach some of the children who are behind on their studies due to the schools being destroyed.
Your donation will help pay for my travel expenses to the Yabucoa base, and required gear such as: protective construction clothing, an air mattress and other necessities for life in a tropical disaster area. Any funds collected beyond my goal will be donated directly to All Hands and Hearts – Smart Response.
April 30 is the deadline for my trip to be funded. Please help, and together we can help Puerto Ricans devastated by Maria.
