Corey's Ecology trip to Peru

Donation protected
This is for my son Corey Brumbaugh.  He is a Biology major at Central Washington University.  He has worked hard to pay his way through school and continues to do so while maintaining  a 3.0 plus GPA.  He has always been an over achiever with his education and graduated highschool with his AA.  He will turn 21 this coming spring and earn is BA in June and has already begun his research for his Masters.

He has always been an animal lover and has chosen to go into Herpetology after completing his education. During the summer of 2014, Corey was given the opportunity to be a member of CWU's small mammal research team for the Washington State Department of Transportations I-90 East Project . He is supposed to be recieving a spot on the amphibian research team during the summer of 2015 for the same project.

As part of his continueing education he is one of only 15 students selected for a once in a lifetime opportunity in 2015 to travel to the rainforests of Peru.

The trip is CWU's Faculty-Directed Education Abroad Program for Rainforest Ecology  from March 16-30, 2015.  Rainforest Ecology provides a rare opportunity for students to spend two weeks in one of the most diverse tropical rainforests in the world.  After studying rainforest ecology in class (during Winter Quarter), students will travel with Dr. Bottcher to the remote Tamshiyacu-Tahuayo Reserve in northern Peru where they will canoe and hike through several rainforest ecosystems to view and study tropical plant and animal species.

In addtion, students will gain valuable field experience by spending several days collecting data for a ongoing study on nocturnal mammals at the field research station along the upper Tahuayo River. Students will also have the opportunity to visit local villages and interact with the native Riberenos.

While this is a 5 credit course for the university, the only part of the trip that Corey's grants, scholarships and finacial aid cover is the tution.  There are several additional costs that students are responsible to cover themselves.

The program cost is $2688.16 and includes: Airport transfers; one-night stay in Lima upon arrival; flight to and from Iquitos; all transfers, lodging and meals in the Amazon; daily guided excursions while in the Amazon; entrance fees to parks in the Amazon; all port taxes; all touist taxes.
Not included: airfare (approximately $1200); passport fees ($120); vaccinations; international medical insurance; personal expenses; and SAEP applicaton fee ($75).
The estimated total cost out of pocket for students is $4000

This course will not only add 5 science credits to Corey's transcript but will also benefit his future in several ways.  This trip will be able to be put on his resume to show diversification of study.  Addtionally, it will allow Corey to see a large variety of reptiles and amphibians in their native habitats. This pairs perfectly with him choosing to go into herpetology.

Thank you for taking the time to read this and help Corey partake in this once in a lifetime educational opportunity.
