Community Support for Mel's family

It is with heavy hearts that we announce that our dear friend and family member Melissa Northwood passed away suddenly on December 31, 2020, of a suspected heart attack.  She was so proud of her family and loved them and her friends fiercely.  Her passing is a devastating loss for her family and the wider Salt Spring Island community.

In the coming days, weeks, and months, we would like to help her partner Steve and their children navigate through their grief and ease their financial burden.

All proceeds will go to the Bevan-Northwood family.  Should you prefer to donate in person, donations can be made at Barb's Bakery and Bistro in town.

I can’t express how deeply the loss of Mel means to us within our small Barb’s Family.   Our lives are so intertwined in and out of work.
You may have gotten a glimpse of Mel on occasion as she quietly and sometimes not so quietly... worked in the back baking all the things.
If you’re enjoying some Barb’s granola this morning... Mel made it.
If you’re finishing the last slice of that fabulous Apple Custard Cake or Stawberry Ruhbarb pie today... Mel made it.
If you’ve over indulged a time or two on chocolate chip cookies or macaroons... Mel made them.
If you bought dozens of shortbread this season for yourself and friends... Mel made them all.
I ask that if you have a little extra please consider helping her family.
Mel was so selfless and really has been a rock and a pillar at Barb’s for years. She helped carry us through those first few scary, early Covid months. We didn’t even ask, she just showed up. So please, let’s show up for her now. Let’s help take care of her family. That is all she’d want. It’s the least we can do
