Starr Readers Scholarship

Donation protected
The scholarship money is to be used to award a qualified senior high school student in Rio Grande City who would like to go to college or a trade school but, because ninety-five percent of the citizens live below poverty levels, is an impossibility. I started Starr Readers ten years ago to provide each child in Rio Grande City every Christmas with a new, unused book; many of these children live along the Texas-Mexico border in colonias without proper medical attention, no proper sewage, no clean water. For so many of the children that book will be their only Christmas gift.

Now, in addition to continuing to provide the Christmas books (this school season Starr Readers delivered over 12,000!) the time has come to provide scholarship money; imagine the pride a family might feel if they have the first child in college? Some of the BRIGHTEST minds in the nation face the chance of not realizing their full potential because of the lack of funds for college. It seems we need these kids as much as they need us.

How will we decide who is awarded the scholarship funds? By the senior student who writes the best children's book
with first-graders to third-graders in mind as the target audience. This has the potential to be an incredibly magic moment in a young person's life and I am asking you to be a part of that moment with your donations.

In addition, for everyone who makes at least a $125.00 donation you will receive a choice of a children's book:
1. "Pete the Cat and His Four Groovy Buttons" by James Dean or
2. "The Day the Crayons Quit" by Victoria Kann

Thank you so much for your consideration!
