Colin's Wheelchair fund

*The 500 amount you see is from a campaign I did last year. So I am starting at 0 at this point.

Hey friends,

Asking for help is hard, so I'ma just go right into it. My beloved wheelchair that I have had since I was 19 is about to go to the big wheelchair field in the sky and I need to get a new one!

I've been trying for the last 6 months to find a different wheelchair that is going to work for me. I've searched high and low in PDX trying to find one covered by my OHP plan and have been ran ragged. I have felt my wheelchair over hte last year rapidly deteriorating from the treads on my tires. To my bent beyond repare frame (I've checked 5 different places in Portland to see if I could fix the frame and it is not at a point that I can.) To the ripping strip of fabric holding me up between my wheels. I've tried replacing parts like wheels, treads, sewing my seat back together.

I have also been trying to navigate a primary care provider for me under OHP   to help me get one funded under my insurance. What all the places I have gone too have told me is that without my previous medical history as a disabled person who was born that way, before they could recommend any place in Portland. They would have to have all of my medical history sent to them. I have not had any medical treatment due to my disability since I was 8 in the first grade. I've tried calling and emailing childrens mercy in Kansas City to see if I could get them to send them over to those places and have been met with crushing silence. I also found out that since I have not invested in a wheelchair more suited for me spending lots of time in it. I have also found out that 2 of my discs are buldging in my lower back due to me not having correct back and seat support and leading a really active lifestyle and having to do work that sometimes involves heavy lifting to make money.

In mid October, I made the decision to move to Olympia WA to work part time at the beginning of the new year and do some self care that I needed to do. My most recent long term temp job ended in October. And  In my time of unemployment I have worked the gigs section of Craigslist and paid my rent for three months of living in Olympia full in advance!!! I have also found free lance data entry opportunities that will supplement income while I am there. I have also managed to save 400 dollars into my savings account working for under minimum wage jobs since late October. Which has been a huge feat for me.

Which brings me to y'all, after all my rejection from potential primary care providers in Portland denying me services of trying to get a new wheelchair at least partially covered under my insurance.  I took to the internet and found one that suits all of my needs and providing me the seat and back support to remedy any further damage to my discs in my back. I can only afford to cover 350 of it and that leaves the rest uncovered. So I am looking for contributions to put to a new one!!! And I know you all can help.

I come to you desperate because without a wheelchair, I cannot get to my job and/or perform the job I am hired for. I know 1,000 dollars is a lot to raise money for. Every little bit counts so whether it is 2, 25, 50, 100, or whatever...whatever is your personal best amount is right now, that you could help me raise the difference is so greatly appreciated. I have a huge 2015 in store, including working with a guitarist from a really popular queer punk band in Oly helping me on a side project. A zine about to launch in late January-early February. I look forward to showing you all a different side of me this year.

Thank you for helping to continually leave bigots eatting my dust. Taking the time to read. And for those who take the time to contribute. From the bottom of my heart and my back, THANK  YOU SO MUCH for helping me remain autonomous, fierce and hella gay!!!

Sincerely,

Colin Ashante
