According to Cancer Research UK 1 in 2 UK people will be diagnosed with cancer in their lifetime (global statistics are similar). Fortunately, for those of us living in the developed world if we are diagnosed with cancer we will have access to the most modern and effective treatment modalities. However, this is not the case for those living in the developing world such as in Africa. Today, cancer is the leading cause of death in Africa, killing more people than HIV/AIDS, malaria, and tuberculosis combined. Radiating Hope is a charity dedicated to addressing the lack of cancer care in Africa with a focus on improving access to Radiotherapy treatment. As a radiation oncology professional for almost 20 years, I am passionate about supporting the provision of potentially lifesaving radiotherapy to the less fortunate in the developing world. I have thus resolved to conquer climbing Kilimanjaro Africa’s highest mountain and the highest freestanding mountain in the world as a fund raising effort and a symbolic gesture of conquering cancer in Africa.
