Chris Powell is a former Cal State Fullerton Titan who played during the 1991-1992 seasons. He currently lives in Alabama with his wife Amy, and his two boys Jamison and Luca.
Back in the early part of 2017 Amy noticed a large growth on Chris's neck. After a visit to the doctor, 2 CT scans, and a trip to an Ear, Nose and Throat doctor, Chris had his first surgery February 17th. The biopsy came back benign. The surgeon said it was just a fluke lymph node enlargement and not to worry.
However, several months later the growth returned on Chris's neck and the diagnosis would not be as kind. Chris has Follicular Lymphoma, type B cell. This is Non-Hodgkin's Lymphoma. It is fast growing and the doctors have jumped on his treatment.
Chemotherapy treatment started on Monday, December 18th. It was a 10 hour day. He had to go back again for more meds on the 19th. Then back again on the 20th to ensure his body was handling the medication. He is sick and can't work. If things go as planned, the routine treatment is 6 months chemo followed by 2 to 4 rounds of radiation treatment. Because, of course, the chemo kills everything, there may be times he cannot have his treatment. This will prolong the treatment time. Chris will be going in between treatments for blood work. His blood cell count has to be at a certain level before he can have more chemo. Chris and Amy are looking at over a year of treatments and recovery.
The next year will obviously bring significant emotional, physical, and financial challenges for Chris, Amy, and the boys. Over the course of the past year Chris and Amy were forced to deplete their savings to pay for medical expenses and other basic necessities to live while Chris has been out of work in order to treat his cancer.
