Caring for Chris Ottosen

Donation protected

Chris Ottosen, a beloved farmer and tractor "doctor" in Kamas valley, was burned with 3rd and 4th degrees burns over his lower half of his body.  Right now, everyday is a fight for his life.  So far he has beat the odds and continues to amaze the medical staff here at U of U Burn Center.

His story is one worth telling everyone you know.  It is a story of courage, strength, love, and miracles.

He was working in his shop (if you know Chris, unless he is sleeping or eating, he is in his shop) and it was a very cold day in Kamas.  He had a propane heater running in the shop and somehow backed into the heater.  His coveralls, which were spotted in oil, grease, and diesel, ignited immediately.  He searched for water but the water in the shop had frozen in the pipes.  He tried to use the fire extinguisher but it was not charged.  He tried to “drop and roll”, but at this point the flames were fueled by the oil and diesel.  He finally went back into the shop and found some antifreeze and was finally able to pour enough onto himself to kill the fire.  He then walked from the shop to the house and proceeded to remove what was left of the burnt clothes. No one was home so he drove himself to the local clinic.  They took one look at him and immediately transferred him to the University Of Utah Burn Center. When asked how he did all this, his reply was “I had two choices, lay down and die or do something about it.”  If you know Chris you know he is a “do-er”. His ability to stay calm and function in a situation like this nothing short of amazing.

After the second surgery it was discovered that he has actually suffered 4th degree burns on his right leg.  You don’t hear much about 4th degree burns because the majority of people don’t make it through this degree of trauma.  He is on his way to recovery but his life will be changed.  We are all changed by this event.  We stand in awe of this great man.  His a teacher and father and continues to teach us lessons of life.  He has reminded us of the power of prayer, putting your trust in the Lord, and the strength that is within us all.

Chris will be in the hospital for a long time and after he is released will need to be in a care facility for a few months.

Chris has helped some many people, and never asked for much in return. So now is the time you can do something for Chris. If you can donate a little toward the cost of these medical bills it will relieve the stress of worrying about how we will pay for all of this.  If you think about it $5-$10 is a trip to Starbucks, $20 is a lunch out with the co-workers, $50 is just all that extra stuff in your Target basket you really didn’t need anyway.  Our family’s Christmas present this year is our dad’s life.
