Chiamaka's Study Abroad to Slovakia

My name is Chiamaka Ofulue and I am an undergraduate student at the University of Maryland majoring in Broadcast Journalism and minoring in Business on the Innovation and Entrepreneurship track. I am the first person in my family to pursue a study abroad trip in Austria and Slovakia.
Journalism has been a part of my life for as long as I can remember. No matter if I wrote personal reviews on childhood classic books like “Goosebumps” or recorded critiques of my favorite movie, “Wizard of Oz,” I was always passionate about journalism. Every Christmas, since I was a child, I asked for either a camera or recording device so I could feed my love for capturing the world around me and being able to talk about it. Journalism gives me the ability to voice my opinion and provides an outlet to the people around me to hear my voice.
At a very young age, I knew I wanted to be a journalist. Elementary school is where I had my first introduction to journalism. While I was in the fifth grade, I was given the opportunity to join my school’s morning announcements team and I heavily enjoyed being an anchor for the show. It was such an amazing experience and my love for journalism continued to grow. I also contributed to the school’s newspaper and was a writer for the entertainment section. I continued that passion all the way through my senior year of high school and participated in various media related projects. In high school, I contributed to a class called Television Production 1-3 and served as the technical director and co-anchor for the morning announcements. Being in the setting of news reporting allowed my passion to flourish. I was able to further develop my skills and associate with fellow broadcasting enthusiasts. All aspects of production intrigued me and upon graduation I was extremely excited to pursue a career in journalism.
I am blessed to have this life changing opportunity of studying abroad in Slovakia and Austria this January 2018. I will be able to obtain three credits during this study abroad trip, bringing me closer and closer to my Spring 2019 graduation date.
My goal in Slovakia and Austria is to work with European students to develop research methods to confront propaganda and extremism. The trip will give me the amazing opportunity as a triple minority student to explore the world, given that this will be my first time out of the country.
I'm asking my community to join me on this adventure and journey of a lifetime! I will take you on the trip with me by updating you, sharing pictures and detailing what I am learning. By supporting me you will be making a difference in my education and affirming that dreams do come true!
Since my birthday is December 17, If you want to give me a birthday present this year, donating would be a truly AMAZING AND NEEDED birthday present and I would be so grateful.
My Goal: The total cost to study abroad is around $4300 which includes (tuition, airfare,food, room & board, institution fees, etc.) My initial goal is to raise $2500, as I will be applying for scholarships and working all semester long to pay off any additional costs. I’m committed to being an example for my younger siblings and my family; I want to show them that they can succeed no matter what obstacles are thrown your way.
My name means “God is beautiful” and I believe that with the grace of God, anything is possible and I thank you for helping me achieve my goals . Whatever God puts in your heart to give, rather that be $5, $20, $50, or $100, please understand that a little goes a long way and any donation, no matter how small, is greatly appreciated.
