Alexis Ramberg is an amazing, vibrant 15 year old girl. Her smile radiates with the beauty and warm loving personality that she possesses. Academics are very important to Alexis and she has continuously excelled at the top of her class. She is very active in life and a cheerleader on her high school team. Her life revolves around friends, family, and cheer. Her mother, Amy and I have been best friends all throughout school and she's forever been like a sister to me. Alexis' father, Jason is an incredible man, husband, and role model for his family. I know firsthand that Amy and Jason are the most amazing parents to Alexis and her older brother Jacob. This family is so full of love and laughter.
The love pours over but the laughter had ceased on July 29, 2014. Alexis suffered from a brain aneurysm. Doctors are unsure at this point of the effects the aneurysm has had on her. Although they are certain that there is some amount of damage that has occurred to her brain, it is too soon to know the extent of its affects. Her doctors are keeping her sedated to help keep the swelling in her brain from increasing. She has made it through the first week, which is the most critical time in her recovery due to an increased risk of excess swelling. Her vitals are looking good as well as the ICP (measurement of pressure in her head) which is staying under 20 and in a normal range with medication and a catheter. The goal is to wean her from some medications and lessen the drainage from the catheter in her head to see if she can maintain those numbers on her own and start waking her up. At that point they will also start weaning her from the ventilatir as soon as they can. As of now, the left side of her body is responsive but the right side has been compromised and not shown more than a slight movement in her foot which is unknown if it was a voluntary movement. As the swelling in her brain subsides, the hope is to see more response on the right side as well.
The current plan is to gether weaned and allow her brain to heal itself. Eight months from now, they plan to perform radiation treatment to remove the blood clot caused by the aneurysm. They are anticipating a very long road to recovery and her days ahead will likely entail a significant amount of grueling physical therapy. Physical therapy is partially covered under their family health insurance but the out of pocket portion is going to be very costly.
The medical bills for the procedures and the hospital stay thus far are astronomical. They are far from complete, however, with the additional two months estimated hospital stay is expected. This financial aspect has not crossed the Ramberg's minds as they are no where near a place of thinking about medical bills or finances of any sort. As they should be, at this time they are focused on Alexis and would give anything humanly possibly for their baby girl to make it through this.
Amy just finished school and passed her first of a series of tests to be a dental assistant and Jason has always been a wonderful provider for his family but right now they need to be at their little girls side which will eventually bare a financial impact in itself.
I was back home from my vacation to the Ramberg's less than two weeks when Amy called to tell me she had bad news. It was wonderful to be with my best friends and family. Alexis was so happy and It was an absolute joy to see her beautiful face. She sent me a Facebook message when I left for home citing that she missed us already and wished for us to return immediately or take her with us to Missouri. I look at that message everyday in disbelief of the situation. Life is so fragile and anything can change in an instant. "There but for the grace of God, go I" -John Bradford
My family and I are 1200 miles away from Amy and Jason and it's hard not to feel completely helpless. I know that even if we were there, we could do nothing to mend their broken hearts. The Ramberg's are the most selfless people I know and they would give the world to anyone in need. Right now they are in need. This has been extremely devastating for Amy, Jason, and Jacob.
My husband Michael and I along with our children, are seeking support in our quest to help our friends. Any donation, even $5 that your family could spare, would greatly impact our efforts to raise money for the Ramberg's. There is no amount too small. If you are not able to donate at this time, I just ask that you pray. Please pray, it doesn't cost a thing to bow your head and ask God to pour his blessings over the Ramberg's and bring Alexis through this. We have a gracious and loving Father and I know he has a plan for Alexis.
