Help Charm City Roller Girls Travel

Utmärkt! That’s how you say excellent in Swedish! We are hopefully going to be saying it a lot because Charm City Roller Girls are headed to Malmö, Sweden to compete in WFTDA’s Division 1 playoffs ! Charm has had one heck of a year, traveling to take on teams from Pittsburgh, Ohio, and Detroit,  and recently welcoming teams from as far and wide as Buffalo, New York and San Fernando Valley! After some intense national battles, we are taking on the world and headed across the pond.  Now we need some help from the most Utmärkt fans in Maryland!

WHO ARE THE CHARM CITY ROLLER GIRLS?

Charm City Roller Girls, LLC , was formed in 2005. What began as a few skaters meeting at a skating rink on Sunday and Thursday nights soon became an organized league of over 80 dedicated people. Inspired by other leagues in New York, Philadelphia, Texas, and all over the United States, CCRG quickly devised a strategy to become Maryland's premiere flat-track roller derby league. Almost immediately, the city of Baltimore took notice. And how could they not?

Today's modern roller derby is vastly different from those made famous in movies like “Kansas City Bomber” and “Whip it.” Charm City Roller Girls is proud to be represented by women and non-binary folks from not only Baltimore but also the surrounding states, each of whom is as unique as the city itself. While we pride ourselves on being athletes, we are also activists, parents, teachers, artists, writers, scientists and much, much more. Every skater brings something indispensable to the league, and together we plan to make roller derby the most exciting thing to hit Charm City since the crab cake.

Our league is comprised of three intraleague teams: the Pigtown Butchers, Hampden Hons, and Dundalk Deviants. These three teams, inspired by the colors of the Maryland Flag and some of the most iconic (if not under-appreciated parts of Baltimore) are comprised of all CCRG league skaters and bout each other in our home season at Skateland  North Point in Dundalk, Maryland.

Our league also has three interleague teams: The Charm City Roller Girls All Stars, Female Trouble, and The Trouble Makers. Each of these teams play bouts at home and away against teams nationwide and around the world.

Our All Star team is currently ranked #38 in the world out of 405 leagues in the Women’s Flat Track Derby Association (WFTDA)!

SHOULD YOU BE IMPRESSED?

Yes!

For the last 12 years we’ve provided a needed community space where people from all neighborhoods can join together to participate in a unique experience in Baltimore. We also provide an opportunity for people of all ages to learn new skills on and off the track. Charm City Roller Girls is PROUD to be a skater-owned and operated organization. We are also members of WFTDA, the current governing body for competitive flat-track roller derby.

What does it mean to be skater-owned and operated? Our league runs entirely on the work of our skaters and other league members. Every bout and event you attend, every poster you see, and every skill on the track is a product of hours of behind the scenes work of our committees.

SO, HOW CAN YOU HELP?

Because we are skater-owned and operated, all of our expenses are paid from our own pockets and with a little help from our friends.  Roller Derby is a relatively new and small sport and while we have a few amazing sponsors, we do not have the benefit of lots of big sponsors like many sports do (although Old Bay or Michael Phelps, if you’re reading this, hit us up!). In order to play at our level and for our teams to travel both locally and internationally, we need your help!

WHERE DOES YOUR MONEY GO?

In the next few months, our teams will be traveling to Virginia Beach, Waldorf, MD, Hanover, PA, and Hatfield, PA. Oh and did we mention that it was just announced the All Stars will be going to the playoffs in Malmo Sweden?! Your donations help cover the cost of our travel and lodging.

WHAT DO YOU GET?

First, you’ll receive the overwhelming satisfaction that comes from knowing that the Charm City Roller Girls can focus on what we do best, playing derby, without too much of a financial burden.

…Oh, you probably meant swag and perks, right? Why of course! We’ve got some very cool stuff for every donation level, or just drop us a few bucks out of the kindness of your heart!
