Elizabeth is a wonderful human being, who spent the last 20 years of her life, her energy, her dreams… everything to build a fulfilling life in the U.S. Elizabeth is originally from Puerto Rico and moved to America in the hope to build a better future for her and her family. And she has been working hard to make it happen (to be precisely, 18 hours a day!).
Her life has completely changed in the last 3 months: her husband abandoned her, bringing with him all her savings from the last years… Two weeks ago, her house was completely destroyed by Hurricane Irma… She lost her home, clothes, and belongings… the only think she has at this moment is her Uber car! She has been living in the car for the last weeks, and everyday needs to decide between using her daily saving either to eat or to fuel her car (and continue working….)
To make things even worse, her home country, Puerto Rico, was recently impacted by Hurricane Maria, and she lost any connection with her family. Now, it’s literally just her, her car, and her faith….
I met Elizabeth during an Uber ride from the Miami airport. She was apologizing for her AC not being properly working… And then mentioned that her car was under water during Irma, but she didn’t have the $4,000 required to repair it. That’s when we started talking about her journey in the last couple of months….
After going through all the uncertainties of a hurricane myself, I can certainly appreciate everything Elizabeth is going through… I left home without knowing if it would be there when I was back. But I was lucky enough that just my backyard and few smalls things were impacted, we lost power for just one week, and I can quickly return to my normal life. Unfortunately, that’s not the same reality for Elizabeth….
I wanted to help her to, raise at least $4,000 to fix her car and ensure that her only belonging will be properly working. Hopefully, we can go beyond and she can start re-building her life.
