Celeste Needs Life-saving Surgery!

Celeste is a young puppy rescued from a puppy mill. When she came to One of A Kind Pet Rescue it was immediately clear that she was very ill. She was small, underweight, and having difficulty breathing. 

Radiographs revealed pneumonia and a very dilated esophagus. It was determined that Celeste actually had a birth defect - a vessel that normally regresses in utero did not in her case, and the vessel was constricting her esophagus at the base of her heart so that food could not pass into her stomach. In addition, the food trapped in her esophagus caused her to regurgitate and choke - leading to aspiration pneumonia.

To give Celeste a chance at life, a surgery needs to be performed quickly to tie off and remove the vessel in her chest. The surgery is risky, and requires a veterinary specialist. If the surgery is successful, Celeste will require a lot of labor-intensive post op care, and only time will tell if her esophagus can recover from the trauma of being stretched once the constriction is released. If all goes well though, Celeste would have a chance at a healthy life and a forever home.
