Heartfelt thanks to the midwives from across the country who created “Carroll of Hope”, a magnificent version of  ‘Somewhere Over the Rainbow’ featuring the ‘Queen of Lovers Rock’ Carroll Thompson to raise our spirits and vital funds to support our work.

Together we can make a difference for future generations.

Best Beginnings are thrilled to have been chosen as the charity to receive 100% of donations for "Carroll Of Hope". As well as raising vital funds to support our work, we also hope the song will raise the spirits of the nation at this incredibly challenging time.

Since the first lockdown in March 2020, more than half a million babies have been born in the UK.

#CarrollOfHope celebrates the incredible work of midwives and the collaboration between midwives and the Best Beginnings team.

All the money raised through this uplifting initiative will help Best Beginnings launch the latest version of the Baby Buddy app - our NHS approved app which has already supported more than 300,000 people across the UK.

Baby Buddy 2.0 is being developed with input from hundreds of parents and professionals to support mothers, fathers and other parents through pregnancy and their children’s early years. Just like the current version of Baby Buddy and in-line with the charity’s mission to reduce inequalities, the new app will be for all parents and be particularly relevant and engaging for parents whose children are at higher risk of poor outcomes.

The new pregnancy and parenting app will have hundreds of engaging and informative films and written content, the ability to create your own digital best friend to support you on your parenting journey and 24/7 access to the Baby Buddy Crisis Text Messenger. Baby Buddy 2.0 has a new look and feel with personalised daily information bespoke for mothers, fathers and other co-parents through pregnancy to their child’s first birthday.

Please use the Sharing options at the top right of this page so your friends, family and network can enjoy this fantastic single and have the opportunity to make a difference to the lives of hundreds and thousands of parents and their children.

Professor Jacqueline Dunkley-Bent, Chief Midwifery Officer for NHS England who founded the Midwifery Ambassador’s Network said: “Thank you to Best Beginnings for the work that you continue to do to inform and empower parents from diverse backgrounds. Like Best Beginnings, I’m passionate about working collaboratively to reduce inequalities in health outcomes and both Claire Mathews, Regional Chief Midwife, and I are delighted that the single created by the Midwifery Ambassadors across the country will be of help. I, like many others, look forward to seeing the impact of the new Baby Buddy 2.0 and its contribution to supporting parents and their relationships with their midwives”,

Carroll Thompson, dubbed the ‘Queen of Lovers Rock’ said: "It was pure joy to create this single with so many fantastic midwives from across the country and to know the money raised through it will support the launch of Baby Buddy 2.0. My mother was a senior midwife for many years, so I am aware of the importance of supporting and empowering all parents and the positive impact that Baby Buddy will create. I dedicate this song to midwives everywhere and to all the families now and in the future that will benefit from Best Beginnings’ powerful and empowering work."

Best Beginnings exists to support parents of all backgrounds to give their children the best start and Baby Buddy 2.0 will be their flag-ship vehicle to achieve this.

Alison Baum OBE, CEO and Founder of Best Beginnings, comments: “I am thrilled that the Midwifery Ambassador Network and Caroll Thompson have created “Carroll of Hope” to help raise vital funds for Best Beginnings. Since the first lockdown midwives in the UK have brought more than half a million new babies into this world. By supporting this Christmas Single you’ll be celebrating midwives everywhere and supporting the “birth” of Baby Buddy 2.0. Together we can make a difference for future generations.”

Simon Austin, the musician who gave his time to work with the Midwifery Ambassadors to create the single said, “I became a father for the second time during the pandemic and like many new parents experienced isolation, anxiety and some depression. The collaboration that has gone into creating and releasing this Christmas Single has been incredibly therapeutic.  I’m thrilled that the money raised through the Carroll of Hope will help launch Baby Buddy 2.0 with supportive daily information for fathers as well as mothers. Having the app would have made such a difference to me in my darkest hours and it feels great to be able to pay forward.”

Early this year, working collaboratively with Home-Start UK and the Parent-Infant Foundation, Best Beginnings published the Babies in Lockdown report which captured the experiences of more than 5,000 parents. The report highlights the serious challenges parents are experiencing and how the pandemic is exacerbating underlying inequalities. For example the survey found that almost 9 in 10 (87%) parents were more anxious as a result of COVID-19 and the first lockdown. There was a notable variation amongst respondents who reported feeling “a lot” more anxious: White 42%, Black/Black British 46%, Asian/Asian British 50%, Parents 25 years old or under 54% and parents with a household income of less than £16k 55%. The Baby Buddy app aims to lessen these inequalities and be a trusted and empowering source of information and support for all new and expectant parents.
