Help Carol Fight Cancer!

In the beginning of September, my mom, Carol, visited MUSC after she had felt a lump in her breast. Two weeks later, she was officially diagnosed with breast cancer. After a biopsy of her breast, she came back in to do a CT scan and a bone scan to see if the cancer had transferred elsewhere. The CT scan confirmed that the cancer had traveled to her liver.
While waiting for the results of the markers of the cancer in her liver, the doctor was thinking that endocrine therapy might be a possibility, and we all took a big breathe. That changed the following week when the markers came back to tell us that the cancer in her liver was different than the cancer in her breast, and the endocrine therapy was no longer an option.
On Friday, November 2nd, Carol went in to get her port placed, and she starts chemotherapy on Monday, November 5th. As of right now, she will do 3 rounds of chemo, and then get a CT scan to see what the results of the 3 rounds of chemo are.
You may be wondering why it took 2 months for a treatment plan to get officially started, and why things took so long to get moving. You see, my mom doesn’t have health care insurance. When we first arrived at MUSC, we visited a financial counselor who told us that Carol makes too much money for MUSC to give her grants to cover any treatment and medical bills. The solution for this, after a few weeks and paying multiple $80 copays just to see a doctor, was to apply for Medicaid.
Now, in order to be approved for Medicaid, you can’t make anymore than $2,024 a month. So for the past 4 weeks, Carol has cut her work hours in more than half, and will be applying for Medicaid next week. She’s already feeling the struggle of having her paycheck cut in half just to get on insurance. The doctors are saying that she probably won’t even be able to work that anyways once she starts chemotherapy. If this is just the beginning, I can only imagine how stressed things are going to get 1...2...5 months from now.
I was raised by both of my parents to be a giver; a giver of time, assistance, money, anything. There’s never been a time in her life that Carol has asked for this much assistance, and even asking the government for Medicaid is going against all she stands for.
The money raised through this gofundme account will be mainly for bills; electricity, car payment/insurance, rent, credit card bills that have been racked up by copays and trying to pay other bills that already can’t be paid. We dont plan on taking any of the money out and into our bank accounts; all of it will go directly towards a bill, or to a gift card for a local grocery store.
