Caroline's Medical Service Trips

Hello friends and family!
As my undergraduate career at Stony Brook University is quickly coming to an end, I am excited to share, shortly after graduation, I will be traveling to Honduras for a week and then spending a month in the Dominican Republic for medical service trips!
I am extremely lucky to be able to volunteer with Global Medical Brigades and the Foundation of International Medical Relief of Children (FIMRC), organizations that will enable me to help others while further developing my own skills and experience in the medical field. On these service trips I have the chance to personally work with under-resourced communities where I will be working alongside doctors, completing community education initiatives, and creating an experience that will last a life time and will allow me to be apart of something so much bigger than myself!
I am traveling to Honduras with other Stony Brook students with an organization called Global Medical Brigades. Global Medical Brigades is part of the world’s largest student-led health and sustainable development organization called Global Brigades. Each year Global Brigades mobilizes thousands of university students around the world to participate in 9 different skills-based programs to improve the quality of life in under-resourced communities. Honduras is cited by the World Bank as the 3rd poorest country in the Western Hemisphere and has been designated as a priority country by the Pan American Health organization/WHO Strategic Plan. The basic needs of education, health care, and clean water are luxuries for the majority of the people there, and in the rural communities where we will be working, these luxuries are even harder to find.
On my upcoming brigade, I will have the opportunity to work in triage, work with doctors and dentists, assist in a pharmacy, provide health education, and work on the community's public health projects.
For my months stay in the Dominican Republic, I will be volunteering with FIMRC in the Summer International Health Fellowship. I will be working in the town of Restauración which is located in Dajabón, the second poorest province in the Dominican Republic. It is comprised of a town center and a handful of outlying rural villages located on the Haitian border. In Restauración, medical care is provided in the Municipal Hospital located in the town center as well as rural clinics that serve the outlying communities. I will be working closely with the local hospital and clinics, conducting rounds with staff and assisting with patient intake at the hospitals as well as five rural clinics. I will also have the unique opportunity to develop and execute at least one mobile medical clinic to a remote area to provide care to families where access is severely limited. Additionally, I will work to address the lack of education through leading health focused lessons for youth empowerment programs, diabetes support groups, and FIMRC's Agentes de Salud Program.
I am so excited for these trips but I can't do it without your support! These trips are completely voluntary and the cost of attendance rests on each of the participants to fundraise for their stay.
