Carolina Bortolleto, an undocumented and unafraid leader in the undocumented immigrant youth movement, has worked tirelessly for years to help our community and fight for immigrant rights, and now she is the one in need of help. Carolina has been in the hospital since early December 2014. With sudden stomach complications, she had to undergo 6 major emergency surgeries in early December. She continues to be in the hospital and will likely be in the hospital for a few more weeks as she continues to recover and heal in the care of doctors and surgeons.
She has been thorough a lot these past few weeks, in and out of major surgeries and a lengthy stay in the ICU. But is a fighter. and has faced her situation the same way she has dealt with adversity in her life, with determination and strength. She is on her way to getting better and we hope she will have a full recovery in the weeks and months to come, but it will be a long recovery process.
Carolina is undocumented and does not have health insurance, as many of our immigrant families who lack access to resources. Her medical bills are growing and will be more than $100,000. The costs from her surgeries and her hospital stay are adding up, and will continue to add as up as she recovers these next few weeks and months in the hospital. She will all also require follow up care after she is able to go home. This fund is to help our family with her medical costs, please donate what you can, any amount will help.
Carolina's bio:
Carolina Bortolleto was born in Brazil and moved to Danbury, CT at the age of 9 with her parents and twin sister. She studied at Western Connecticut State University, and graduated in 2010 with a BA in Biology and minors in International Studies and Anthropology. Describing herself as a “Science nerd with a passion for politics and social justice”, her interests and aspirations combine the world of science and social issues. Most importantly, she proudly describes herself as “Undocumented and Unafraid” and has been a leader active in immigrant youth movement. In October 2010, she co-founded Connecticut Students for a DREAM , a statewide organization of young adults that works for the rights of undocumented youth and their families. Currently serving as the College Access Coordinator, she seeks a society where immigration status is not a barrier to education. She also currently serves on the United We Dream board. Her ultimate goal is to build a community of undocumented youth and to empower undocumented youth to reach their full potential and actively take on their future.
