In Honor of Carol M. Smith - Scholarship

I greet you with joy and excitement to share an amazing opportunity to contribute toward excellence and education in honor of my endeared mother, Carol M. Smith, who transitioned from labor to reward on the Eve of 2013.
A burning passion of my mother was youth and education. Perhaps this was because she recalled overcoming her own struggles growing up in a single-parent home and in poverty yet regardless of these challenges she succeeded in becoming a first generation college graduate. Identifying with the plight of children facing similar challenges, Carol committed to fundraising and organizing the annual Robert H. Jones scholarship fund at her local church in Harlem, New York.
With my mother's recent passing along with the rising need to fund education due to escalating unemployment, unprecedented student loan debt and wealth disparities that disproportionately affect minorities, it is critical that we continue her work and in so doing keep her memory alive.
It is therefore in a spirit of humility and urgency that I solicit your support for Robert H. Jones annual scholarship drive which culminates on September 22, 2013 and ask that you make a contribution in honor of my mother, Carol M. Smith. Each $1,000 raised will go to fund a student who demonstrates financial need, academic excellence and a strong commitment to faith beliefs.
I am a recipient of the generosity of others who contributed to this fund. My scholarship assisted tremendously with purchasing my first semester books for required class readings at Fairfield University. Because of financial assistance from external sources such as the Robert H. Jones scholarship, I continued my educational pursuits at institutions such as Columbia, Harvard and Oxford Universities. I am therefore vested in more ways than one to the continued success of fundraising so that others may experience similar opportunities.
I hope that you join me in helping to sponsor at least three high school seniors who are college bound. The goal is $3,000 ($1,000/per scholarship) and I will match at least 100 percent (dollar for dollar) of the funds received in honor of my mother, Carol M. Smith. No amount is too small or too large. Please give generously but more importantly give as you are responsibly able.
Thank you for your commitment to my mother's legacy and the education of students, who like my mother, in many cases are first generation college bound students. Your contribution will make a difference!
