Carman's Heroic Horse Rescue!

Donation protected

Carman was on the train from Santa Fe to Albuquerque, traveling past corralled  horses on the Santo Domingo Pueblo on her way to work.  She did not see thriving, loved animals, instead she saw horses penned up, in terrible condition without food or water. Some couldn't walk due to lameness and foot-long curved hooves, some were starving, others had no water. It was summer.  She did not turn away. She returned that weekend by car, and after much effort, found the spot where the horses were kept. She brought food and medicine, and tried to get the tribal officers to respond to the issue.  They did not. So, Carman got help from a ferrier to trim the hooves so two of the horses could walk and paid for a veternarian to come and provide needed treatment.

She could not find a way to rescue the horses without buying them. With her own money she paid very high prices for two of the horses and arranged for a trailer to deliver them to Heart and Soul Sanctuary.

She met another animal-loving soul there, Linda, who had been feeding and watering the animals for a decade. Linda had converted her van into a transport vehicle for food and water, installing a tank and a pump to deliver water to animals who were left untended and neglected.  She fed dogs, pigs, cows, sheep and horses using her own resources and never asking anything of anyone there. She did this out of love and concern for the animals.

Together, they set out to save two more of the most vulnerable horses (out of scores that were desperate).  Although Heart and Soul did not have the resources to care for all four horses that Carman and Linda brought to them, they also could not say "no" and took in all four.

Carman and Linda paid for food, water and veterinary care themselves while the horses were in pad-locked corrals on the pueblo. They were, however, treated like trespassing criminals for caring and were banished from ever entering Santo Domingo pueblo again.

Although Carman and Linda refuse to be reimbursed for their massive out-of-pocket expenses, we would like to help raise funds for the ongoing high cost treatment and care the horses still need.

All funds raised will go toward the extensive continuing expenses of the 4 horses they were able to save and bring to Heart and Soul Sanctuary.  In just a few short months the horses are barely recognizable as the same starving crippled horses with oozing sores who were delivered to Heart and Soul. They are thriving at the sanctuary.

Please know that Indian pueblos are sovereign and do not abide by US laws. They can do as they wish with their animals, and there are no laws to protect them. Please write to your Congressional representatives and ask them to support animal rights on Indian land.
