Caring For Carmela In the NICU

Donation protected
After nine months of anticipation, Carmela Marie LaGrandier entered the world on August 2nd 2017. What was supposed to be the most exciting day for new moms Barbara and Danielle, quickly became the scariest. Due to previous struggles with fertility, Danielle had a scheduled C-section at 37 weeks and 2 days. Although this is considered "term", Carmela was born prematurely to decrease the risk of complications of a natural delivery due to unforseen health issues with Danielle. With that being said, despite the precautions, at the time of delivery Carmela required immediate intervention to assist her with breathing as she was rushed to the NICU. It was hours before Barbara and Danielle could see their little girl, let alone take care of her. Once this was possible, they learned that she required respiratory intubation, ventilation, and two chest tubes at just a few hours old for a collapsed lung.

While no one can fully prepare for these types of circumstances, this new little family has been through so much in just a weeks time. Barbara is currently employed with a private ambulance company  in addition to volunteering. Danielle works as a therapist at a local psychiatric hospital. These two moms dedicate their time to helping others in need, but are far too prideful to ask for help during this difficult time.

While Carmela is a little fighter, she still has a long road ahead of her with no specified plans for discharge from the hospital at this time. Her current status is dependent on various treatments that provide support to her lungs as they strengthen and maintaining nutrition intravenously. She can only tolerate minimal stimulation as well, meaning they can't comfort or support her like most parents desire to with a newborn. They must sit back and hope that Carmela hearing them talk to her helps even just a small amount.

Additionally, most employers unfortunately don't lend enough time for them to spend with their little girl as she continues to recover. We are hoping to assist in making that a possibility by raising funds for the family to assist with any financial burdens that accompany having a child in the NICU until she can come home safely.

If you are capable of assisting, please donate as any amount can make a difference and/or share this page to help a family in need.
