CANNIBAL at Next Stage

Donation protected
Cannibal, a new play by Thom Nyhuus, is the first-ever production by Scrap Paper Theatre, a theatre company committed to creating accessible, invigorating, and engaging theatre for today's audiences.

Cannibal tells the story of Bridget Walker, who has written a wildly successful play inspired by the disappearance of her son. While the show has critics raving, it sends those closest to her reeling.

"Cannibal stood out to me for its daring and challenging depiction of womanhood and motherhood, as well as for the questions it raises about who has the right to tell which story, and the ethics of turning personal pain into arts." - Derrick Chua, Director of the Actors Fund of Canada and award-winning producer

"Cannibal” gives action to ideas that at the present time exist mostly in conversations between friends. Ideas full of contradictions, that lead to questions, impossible to get to the bottom of. Nyhuus approaches these questions brilliantly from the inside, writing his male and female characters with great tenderness, directness, humour and wholeness." - Ellie Moon, playwright of Asking For It and What I Call Her

"The jury was astounded by the fact that this is one of Thom’s first plays. He already has a well-defined voice and his subject matter is relevant and engaging." - Lucy Eveleigh, Executive Director of the Toronto Fringe and juror at Next Stage Theatre Festival

We are asking for $5000 to produce this show. All of this funding would go into the production, to accomplish our design and to book rehearsal spaces and, most importantly, to pay our artists for the immense amount of time and effort they will be contributing to the production. We have an amazing team put together, helmed by our award-winning director Courtney Ch'ng Lancaster of Soulpepper and Howland Theatre Company. Our two powerhouse producers Annie Clarke and Emma Westray are both alumni of Generator's Artistic Producer Program, having worked with Studio 180 and House + Body Collective, respectively. Thom Nyhuus is an award-winning actor and writer, and Justine Christensen, who will be performing in the lead role, is also the co-creator of LET ME IN Theatre. They are both recent graduates of George Brown Theatre School.

In sum, we have an absolutely incredible team working on a project we believe will be a hugely exciting addition to Toronto's theatre scene. The play is unlike anything you've ever seen. With the funding granted by our donors, we will be able to make sure what is presented to our audiences is the best version of this story, as well as launch Scrap Paper Theatre, ensuring exciting and genre-defying theatre for years to come.
