Camp Eclipse works as an annual leadership retreat and information session for lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and queer (LGBTQ)youth and those who are LGBTQ friendly. This camp is run by dedicated, local volunteers who serve as teachers, students and mentors to the youth who attend.
In October 2013 we started a campaign to $500 for Camp Eclipse as part the 21 Leaders Program from 21 Inc. Based on the success of that campaign we are back and have made it our 2014 mission to make sure that Camp Eclipse is able to operate this summer.
We need $10,000 to see this dream become a reality.
Now in it's fifth year, Camp Eclipse (hosted by Planned Parenthood - Newfoundland and Labrador Sexual Health Centre), this educational and empowering youth retreat will takes place during the summer at the beautiful and tranquil Environmental Education Centre, Salmonier, Newfoundland.
Camp Eclipse brings together lesbian, gay, bisexual, trans-identified, two-spirit, intersex, queer, questioning, and any interested youth, between the ages of 16 - 24, for four days of empowering workshops, out-door nature activities, and networking opportunities.
It provides youth the opportunity to learn how to enable and implement changes in their schools and communities, to build strong social support networks, and to have fun in a supportive, non-judgmental environment. Nestled in an old growth boreal forest, the Environmental Education Centre provides the perfect setting for uninterrupted personal growth, reflection, and healing.
Camp Eclipse: OUT in the woods was named by the youth who attended the first camp. The Eclipse represents many things the camp stands for. Solar eclipses are monumental and unifying events. During an eclipse the moon (representing minority queer youth) lines up with the sun (representing the majority). Despite the moon's relatively small size, it becomes visible and empowered. No matter what the size of the majority, the minority can rise, remain successful, and become visible.
Camp Eclipse empowers youth to do the same.
