Camp Chahim 2018 – Summer Day Camp for Mayan Children in Belize
July 23-27, 2018

Sponsor a Child to Attend Summer Camp!

Children’s summer camps create growth opportunities and build self-esteem. Participants learn valuable skills, make new friendships, and have fun. Unfortunately, not every child has the chance to benefit from these experiences because they live in underdeveloped areas and come from struggling households that can’t afford the cost of a summer camp.

Camp Chahim 2018

Children who need our help most are sometimes the least likely to receive it because of where they live.  By hosting summer camps in underdeveloped countries, Camp Chahim gives kids in outlying regions a chance to thrive.  This year, our main camp is in Jalacte, Belize located in the Toledo District of Southern Belize near the border with Guatemala. This is our most remote camp yet. Our second camp is in Arusha, Tanzania (see below for more details on Arusha).

Every Child Can be a Star

Camp Chahim is free to attend for 30 underprivileged children ages 9-11 in the Jalacte school. The name, Chahim, comes from the Kekchi Mayan’s word for “star”.  Children are the stars of the future.

Who are the Kekchi Mayans?

Kekchi Mayan is one of the Mayan peoples living in Belize and Guatemala that make up about 3% of the population in Belize. Growing up in the outer regions of a small municipality (Punta Gorda) means the chances of receiving a good education are severely limited. It's not surprising that many Mayan children drop out of school before making it into middle school.

How can Camp Chahim help?

Camp Chahim provides children a chance to grow and have new experiences in their own neighborhood. They will participate in yoga lessons, creative art projects, English literacy lessons, one-on-one reading lessons and receive a hot lunch each day. The camp culminates with a recital where the children showcase what they learned during the week to parents and village elders. This builds confidence and pride. Plus, the children keep the writing supplies given to them at camp for the coming school year.

What does your donation cover?

By sponsoring a child, you will be paying for the following items they receive during camp:

-       English vocabulary and reading book

-       Notebooks, pens, pencils

-       Art supplies

-       T-shirt with Camp Chahim logo

-       Hot lunch

-       Sling bag

-       Camp Counselor & Cook’s salaries (we hire locals!)

One hundred percent of the money raised in this campaign will go directly to fund the camp for the children of Jalacte School District (unless directed to Arusha). Any leftover donations will go towards community outreach programs in the local vicinity after the camp concludes.

We are hosting two camps this year!

Our second camp will be in Arusha, Tanzania this Oct. 2018. There won't be a separate fundraising campaign for it. If you would like some of your donation to go towards the Arusha camp, please direct which portion of your donation is for Arusha and which portion is for Belize. If you want to hear more about our plans for Arusha, leave a message here.

Gratitude

The children of our camps love to express their gratitude. For donations of $50 or more, we will send camp supporters a hand-painted Thank You note.  Examples of past Thank You notes.

“Dear Sir/Madam,
