Send Our CA 8th Graders to DC

Last year we raised nearly $18,000 to send our students to D.C.! It was a successful campaign, and our 8th grade students had the trip of a lifetime. This year we're aiming a little higher. We are seeking to raise $20,000 to send our new class of 8th grade students to Washington D.C. this June, 2015. For many students, a trip to Washington D.C. is a rite of passage. Going to the Nation's capital inspires and supports our mission to prepare students to be college ready and college bound.

The cost to send one student is just over $1692.00 dollars. Our students come from some of the most socio-economically challenges neighborhoods of the city and $1692.00 is a huge financial burden. Because of this, we ask you to consider donating any amount. Your donation will directly support a life-changing experience for our exceptional students.

Check out our NEW video, which contains a little more information about why this trip is so important for our students, and includes interviews with some of the lucky students who will be attending the trip.

Who We Are
Camino Nuevo Charter Academy (CNCA) is a community of high-performing public schools that utilizes a comprehensive approach to prepare students from preschool through high school for success in college and in life. We integrate academic rigor, community, family, and wellness to empower students to thrive in a culturally connected and changing world. Camino Nuevo Charter Academy, Harvard site, is a high-performing K-8 school located just west of MacArthur Park in Koreatown. The school has been in operation since 2001 and serves 500 students per year in a college-preparatory environment.

Our Mission
The mission of Camino Nuevo Charter Academy is to educate students in a college preparatory program to be literate, critical thinkers, and independent problem solvers who are agents of social justice with sensitivity toward the world around them.

Who We Serve
CNCA students reside in some of the most historically underserved areas of Central Los Angeles, including the communities of MacArthur Park, Pico-Union, Wilshire Corridor, and Echo Park "“ a region that holds the second densest neighborhood in the U.S., where the annual family income is among the lowest in the city. The vast majority of our students come to us from Spanish-speaking homes, living below the poverty line. Students who attended CNCA Harvard have been accepted into a wide-range of colleges and universities, including elite Ivy League Universities, UC schools, small liberal arts colleges, and many public out of state universities.

Our Results
The Harvard Site has been awarded with numerous awards and accolades over the past twelve years including being named a California Distinguished School and Title I Academic Achievement school. The Harvard Site was also one of two elementary schools nation-wide awarded with a "Gold Gain" EPIC award for breakthrough student achievement gains. Of the over 150 schools who were eligible to apply, Harvard students made the most progress in math over time and were number four for reading and writing. In addition to these awards, Harvard received a six-year accreditation from the Western Association of Schools and Colleges and continues to outperform every district school in the neighborhood including schools with gifted and magnet programs. In 2013, the Harvard Site received an 868 as an API score. The statewide average API for all students was 789. This API score puts the Harvard Site amongst the top 10 highest performing middle schools within LAUSD.
