Cameron's Road to Walk

This young man's name is Cameron; Cameron had a very rough start to his life and has jumped through a lot of hoops to get to where he is today. Cameron was born at 28 weeks premature, weighing 2 lbs 5 oz with a very hard time breathing on his own. He was helped by the wonderful staff through St. Vincent Hospital in Green Bay, WI. As time progressed, he has endured an inguinal hernia repair, open heart surgery at the age of 2, a corrective eye surgery, and has had his tonsils removed due to sleep apnea, in addition to 6 different rounds of botox shots to his legs. When Cameron was 2 he was diagnosed with infantile spasms. Which means, a cluster of seizures that happen frequently and are like rapid misfire of messages within the brain. After overcoming these seizures he was then diagnosed with Diplegia Cerebral Palsy which affects the lower half of his body. We have undergone many different treatments to attempt to loosen the tone in his legs, to allow them to function like any other child's leg muscles, in order to help him walk. At this time we have yet to find any dedfinate answers for this issue, and unfortunately, he is still unable to walk. There is a light at the end of the tunnel, but the light is still seemingly, very far away.  As of late, Cameron's dedicated parents have been going back and forth a Children's specialty clinic in St. Paul, MN as the local Dr, Dr. Terrence Edgar has exhausted all efforts in trying to help Cameron.  The Children's clinic has seen kids like Cameron, and are confidnet they have the answers we have all been waiting for.  Recently, Cameron has been chosen as a canidate for a very specific proceedure, that could change his life, forever.   Selective Dorsal Rhizotomy is a very intense surgery. This process involves the doctor's entering through Cameron's lower spine and stimulating the different nerves, determining the difference between the nerves that affect the tone in his lower halfand those that dont.  They will then cut 20-40% of the nerves causing the issue, releasing the extreme tightness in his lower body. 
This is a very uncommon proceedure and there are many prequalifications the patient must undrgo prior to this surgery. He must first go through an MRI to conclude there are no tumors or "surprises", as the surgeon described it, when they go in to do the operation. On October 28th Cameron will undergo the surgery and will be kept hospitalized for six weeks in Minnesota. This will include an intense six days a week therapy and constant monitoring, so they can ensure the nerves do not have infections or leaks after the incision is closed. We will keep everyone updated and share pictures on Cameron's journey throughout the entire process.
