Cameron Hernandez Medical Recovery

Donation protected

Tuesday, August 1st, was like any other day: Cameron went to work, came home, and spent time with his two little boys Kellan (6) and Jax (2.5), as well as his high school sweetheart and wife Ashley.  Evening activities included playing with his boys, dogs, and working out at the gym where he experienced a slight headache.  The evening ended with a bedtime story, kisses and hugs from daddy and a tuck in for the evening. A day like all the others, one we tend to take for granted.

Cam was a very active healthy man enjoying his passions of golf (that he took VERY seriously), Hawkeye football, playing his guitar and coaching his oldest son in baseball, soccer and golf.   But his most beloved passion in life was hanging out with family and friends.

All that changed the next morning, Wednesday August 2nd.  Cameron woke with a severe headache.  Within the hour his speech was slurred, he didn’t recognize his kids and had difficulty walking. An immediate trip to the local ER, where he was assessed and immediately flown by air ambulance to Iowa City Hospitals for brain surgery.

Cameron had suffered a massive brain bleed.  It has been determined that he has an Arteriovenous Malformation (AVM), which had ruptured and bled into his thalamus area of the brain. What this means is that his brain was under a great deal of pressure to accommodate his bleeding, causing significant damage.  An MRI has determined that his brain stem is unharmed, but that there is an area of significant permanent damage in his brain.  It remains undetermined what level of function will return.  Only time will tell.

The family is looking at significant medical expenses for this long haul journey they have been placed on.  Ashley had to close her own in-home business to be a full time caregiver for Cameron, and mom to their boys.  They are facing unfathomable expenses in co-pays, uncovered medical bills, and other expenses related to being present for Cameron.  So many people care, and want to help.  Donating so Ashley doesn’t have to worry for her financial future is a way we can help. All monies raised will go directly to the care of Cameron.  Should anything be left over it would go into a fund for her children. Whether you are able to donate or not, please keep Cameron in your prayers.  He is a husband, daddy, son, brother, uncle, best friend and coworker.  So many people care and love this family.  Add them to your prayers.

The family has requested that no pictures of Cameron in the hospital be included, to respect his privacy.
