I'm Tiffany Lytle, a 2nd year M.A. student in the Asian American Studies program at UCLA.
For the past year, I have been working on writing songs about Cambodian American experience for my Master's Thesis' creative project. This EP will include a fusion of Cambodian and American style pop, with both Khmer and English languages intertwined.
Touching on the experiences of Cambodian Americans who survived the Cambodian Civil War and Genocide, these songs explore and critique the treatment of refugees in the United States, while providing a musical voice to first generation Cambodian Americans, like myself, who try to negotiate Cambodia's tragic past.
I'm extremely lucky to have a team of musicians interested in helping me with my project! Money raised here will go toward having these songs played and recorded by an amazing team of professionals that include producer and drummer Donald Barrett, and bass player Bobby Watson of Rufus. Funds would pay for studio space, mixing and mastering by Thai Long Ly, and a small team of amazing session players.
We are also seeking funding for our short film about the making of this project, and the larger social implications of work like this. I hope that we can support artists whose stories and histories we can learn from in order to recognize the cycles of oppression that our world continually goes through.
We are hoping to release this record by Spring of 2017 with a short video documenting our recording process and a choreographic project! Yes! That means there will be DANCE (of course)!
This EP is a true expression of my creativity and artistry, allowing me to negotiate academic and socially conscious thought while providing an entertaining musical experience. As a mixed-race Cambodian American, it has been difficult for my voice to be heard against the chatter of questions about "what I am," so I hope this EP can show you a little bit about what is on my mind and in my heart.
