EDUCATION CANNOT STOP: Care for a Child in Nigeria

Hello! We are Unity in Diversity (UID), a non-profit organization based in The Hague, The Netherlands. Although the world is currently struggling to get through these hard times, we wanted to take this opportunity to bring to light a project close to our hearts.

In 2019, we launched a pilot project in the Summer which introduced us to children in rural communities of Nigeria. During this project, we met many brilliant minds like Funmi from Shamjerert School (see video below) with the potential and ambition to go far in life. You can read more on our project here.

However, since the outbreak of COVID-19, the worldwide closure of schools has affected children all around the globe. In rural communities of Nigeria, teachers have improvised new ways to reach their students during the lockdown - through WhatsApp voice notes of recorded lessons. At the same time, schools have imposed a minimal base fee to help with the payment of salaries.

But this still proves to be a challenge.

Many children and the youth of the rural communities are completely cut off from online learning as they cannot afford the means to access these lessons, nor pay the minimum fee.

What can we do about it?

In line with UN Sustainable Development Goal 4  to ensure inclusive and equitable quality education and promote lifelong learning opportunities for all, we at UID are determined to urgently help children from rural communities in Nigeria continue learning and participating in school lessons, and we want to start with students of the Shamjerert School in Idiagbon Village.

But we can’t do this alone. We need YOUR HELP to collect as many funds as we can in order to cover the cost of helping these young students continue learning. Your donation could be a lifeline for a child’s education.

How much do we need?

We hope to be able to fund these children’s urgent educational needs from now until the schools in Nigeria reopen.

The Shamjerert School has a total of 96 students and 23 teachers. Though some students and teachers may be equipped for online learning, not everyone at the school is. But YOU can help! Access to the internet for one child costs less than your monthly subscription to Netflix!

Upon conducting a Needs Assessment Survey, the following are the cost of the items urgently needed:
  • Cost of an affordable mobile phone: €50 x  64 (46 students and 18 staff) = €3200
  • Cost of monthly internet data for a student: €7 x 46 students = €322
  • Cost of monthly internet data for the school (teachers and staff): €115
Donations earned from this fundraiser will fund as many students as possible. Once schools have reopened, any excess in donations will go towards conducting an impact assessment study in Nigeria and to push more educational-themed projects forward.

What impact would our donations have?

The children in these rural communities have immense potential to grow, but with schools being closed and without any means to access online lessons, there is a risk that education will stop becoming a priority. So instead of paying for a night out, why not pay for a child’s education?

We appreciate any amount that you are able to provide to help educate the children in rural Nigerian communities and keep them in schools!

From the bottom of our hearts, thank you!
